  1. I have put 312mm VRS brakes on my Scout as the car is heavy, 1,645kg stock, loaded with stuff/kid/etc easy 2 tones.

Made a lot of difference as stock ones feel a bit mushy.

With a stage 2 remap i am not surprised that you upgraded but you get what i am talking about.

Do you remember how much it cost and do you think a dealer could do it? I suspect it isn't cheap..

The car is on standard Dunlops and winter tires should help of course but i do not fancy the hassle of changing tires every 6 months. but maybe i should just lump it instead of fiddling with brakes

  2. There is brake assist feature on Scout (most Octavia I believe) that when it detects rapid braking it increases servo help to counter the fact that most people do not use enough pedal pressure quickly enough. It is designed for the type of scenario where you come up on stationary traffic on a Motorway at 70 mph and need to emergency stop. I think the only way to know it has been activated is it also triggers the hazard lights to flash.

Personally I try not to brake as its bad for economy ;)

You might be right that i could be confusing brake assist with the ABS (which is when you get that 'pumping' under your foot (correct??)). I don't recall any situation with hazard lights flashing

If brake assist is meant to shorten the stopping distance, my view is that it isn't that effective compared to my 7 year old Ford Focus 1.6 and my old A6. My wife who drives the Scout most of the time has been saying the same.

Granted - it is a 4x4 on higher suspension with more bulk than a Focus - but I am just not so impressed by it's stopping power. With or without brake assist and/or ABS.

  3. What is this problem that you hint of?

Brake assist is meant to put the brakes hard on in an emergency situation.

And avoids you hitting something .

How has it failed to achieve that?

The alternative is to drive slower and use the brakes in a non emergency manner.

I suppose i am saying that I am suprised how quickly the system judges it to be an emergency situation.

And yes it might be that I am underestimating my speed but I do generally drive quite civilised. kids in the back etc

Better tires on country roads - yes probably a good idea but still I do wonder if the set up could be upgraded?

  4. No it doesn't. I meant this topic is about Scout brakes. ahem

6 months and 10,000 miles on I have been pretty happy with our new Scout (2.0 CR, Anthracite, Polished Proteus). It is a very very good car.

    However,

If there is one niggle it would be the brakes.

They are not bad but I do find that brake assist kicks in far too soon when hitting the brakes hard. Scenario, country B road, 65 MPH, blind corner, horse with rider. etc etc. Its not dangerous but I do miss my old Audi A6 brakes sometimes. that car was 10 years old when I sold it

The Scout will be up for its first service within the next few months so two questions:

    - is this what everybody else is experiencing?

    - is it possible to upgrade the brakes and at what costs?

    thanks as always,

  5. I suspect that this might not work on your Octavia as it is a 2011 (therefore facelift model), check post #13.

It works on the pre-FL models.

Do you have xenon headlights on your Scout? I know that the Scout gets headlight washers as standard irrespective of if you specify xenon's or not but I wondered if this 'tip' might work on the FL but only on non-xenon equipped models?

hmmm - i missed post #13. i will check it out and report back

My Scout doesn't have the Xenons

  6. No need to disable them, pull the wiper stalk to wash the windscreen but release it quickly before pulling it again and holding it for the required time.

The first quick pull temporarily disables the headlight washers whilst the second longer pull allows you to clean the windscreen.

Some claim that this doesn't work but it does on both my 2007 vRS and 2008 Scout.

that's a very useful tip! thanks for that

Having said this, apart from clearing dirty headlights I do find this feature an extremely effective tool to get bumper huggers of my back! Produces an enormous cloud of water.

I was driving through Holland last summer and people there drive right up your *rs even if there is no space to move out of the way - so aggressive. obviously keen to get to next 10 mile traffic jam as quickly as possible.

  7. I think that would actually be quite tempting once I am getting closer to the end of Warranty for my Scout (best car i ever owned) in a few years time, and I am sure it will sell very well in the home counties but I reckon atleast £30K don't you think?

but I see it does have those stupid christmas lights

  8. all of the above.

We love our Scout and like the fact that there aren't that many around - especialy with the polished alloys.

I wouldn't give it 10 of 10 for comfort though; more like a 7.5 - with an empty boot the suspension can be rock-hard - and having had to wait for 8 months to take delivery wasn't great either but we certainly got value for money.

  9. Have had our new Scout now for 3 months and have loved it every day. However, just came back to our car after an afternoon in Exeter to find all 4 windows down. I remember pressing the remote lock - possibly twice - before setting off. Nothing was gone thank God but its a bit worrying..

I noticed a few weeks back that two windows on the left were halfway down after locking. Didnt see it happening and i was only away for a few minutes.

Has anyone seen this before? I will certainly call dealer tomorrow

  10. Thanks, they do look quite good :) I only saw pictures of them when I was car hunting, and ordered them on the strength of just pictures (very un-like me). A couple of months after ordering someone posted some pics of their car in which they didn't look great, and ever since I had fingers crossed they'd be OK. When I saw them I did like them, and think they were a really good match with the Anthracite paint. I was quite relieved to say the least!

It was probably me who was posting those pics. It took me about a day to get over 'the look' but now I think they really complement the car and am very very pleased with them.

One question for you I have is how do you find the leather/Alcantara? My dealer was quite dismissive of the quality and basically advised against it but I can't help thinking that I made a mistake not ordering

I have just done 2,500 miles in mine now and absolutly love it

  11. Today's the day.

Ordered December 20th and picked up at lunchtime today, Anthracite Scout Diesel with a few bits (including the polished wheels). Only done about 40 miles so far, but very impressed so far.

Coming from a Yeti of similar mechanics (140 Diesel 4x4) Scout seems a good chunk quieter (not expecting that), boot is huge and practical (knew that was the case) very nicely finished and a really comfy, solid feel to it.

Looking forward to a good run to get used to it. So far well worth the wait.

Congratulations! good spec too - i have the same. 6 weeks of ownership and still love it

  12. Yes it would be - but there have been examples on this forum where they've been forgotten. If you look in the arches they are fairly obvious - blue plastic I think on the springs all round. I think in hindsight, that mine rides best when its full of stuff - if can be a bit crashy when empty. Have you got a spare - I bet not having that in makes a difference.

    Les.

I have now had a chance to have a look and am glad to report nothing blue in the arches.

it really is the set up when empty. i had a two hour drive in streaming rain on Sunday with car full of kids and the boot full and that's when it came into its own. It just needs a bit of weight. it was great, perfectly planted and comfortable whilst the 4x4 and Dunlops (why are people complaining?) provided plenty of grip.

I think you are right - we should perhaps add a spare wheel after all

  13. mlp - if the suspension feels rock hard it might be worth checking the springs for the shipping clamps which should be removed on the PDI. These are plastic 'combs' that slot into the springs to stop the car bouncing about on the train and ferries.

My Scout is more forgiving than either my Focus (sports suspension) or standard Octavia Elegance - in fact it was one of the reasons for buying it because of the rubbish road surface and humps where I live. It is harder than a lot of French and luxury cars however.

It does feel quite 'crashy' at times and it bothers me sometimes more than i care to admit, so i will definitely have a look. Is it just a matter of checking in the wheelarches?

having said that, it would be a major mistake to make by the dealers and potentially quite dangerous too??

  14. Same here pleased for you mines was ordered 1st week in December and still no sign have been told week 24 though still to be confirmed!

We have had ours now for 3 weeks after 7 months of waiting and it's great! Just can't get over the amount of car you get for the price of a Golf. Definitly worth the wait.

One (minor) complaint from the kids in the back though has been the rock-hard suspension, but that might better be a subject of an other post.

I do see more scouts around in these parts (Berks/Wilts), but not more than once every week or so and maybe that's because I am now looking out for them.

  15. I Quite like the scout, and sometimes wonder if I made the right choice getting the vRS instead?

Then I look out the window, and see my vRS glistening in the sun, and I know I made the right choice.

Then I look at the wheels, and wonder.....

Am I the only one who thinks those scout wheels are pig ugly???

A 4x4 vRS is the way forward.....

    Steve

I think the wheels are ok - I have got them myself - but that colour is aweful

  16. We have the makings of a club, I also have an anthracite Scout with polished Proteus alloys on order. The pics are great, thanks for posting them, and I'm more convinced than ever I've made the right choice, roll on July (or whenever it turns up) :)

I think you certainly made the right choice. Although I must say that Les' light blue one doesn't look too bad either.

  17. He's just bought the car home, and it seems to have one.

It's a brand new Elegance on a '10' plate and has the variable boot floor. It's listed as a £140 option on Skoda's website but I was there when he bought it and he only spec'd Maxidot and spare wheel over std.

Anyway is there a boot liner for a car with variable boot floor?! :S

Edit: thanks for posting pics, it looks exactly like what he has.

I have justed collected my new Scout and it didn't come with variable floor. The dealer told me this only comes as standard when ordering a spare wheel, which I didn't.

  19. ..that's the conversation with the wife at the moment.

This Saturday I finally collected our new Scout from the dealers. It was ordered in September so to actually & finally see it felt like a minor miracle.

If you are waiting for a Scout and are sometimes wondering whether this stupid wait will be all worth it – as I certainly have been – I implore you to stick with it. I have only been driving 100 miles so far but what a fantastic car this is! Feels rock solid, has plenty of power (the 2.0 CR hasn’t even been run in) and handles equally pleasing on the motorway as down country lanes. Whilst certainly not as huge as my old A6 (aka Das Boot), its very spacious for what is still not that big a car. The ride height is great too and makes it easy to get in. I have averaged 46 mpg so far

Equipment and tools such as auto-wiping etc and the Radio are very good . The only thing I added was the multifunctional steering wheel, which I believe was a good choice. I don’t think one needs anything more than that (ok maybe a phone set up).

It didn't come with the false boot floor; apparantly you only get that when ordering a spare wheel which I didn't. That's what Skoda Assist is for if I can't work that pump thing.

I was a bit taken aback seeing the alloy wheels (polished Proteus) for the first time as - the car being Anthracite Grey - it now looks like a Brooding Thunderstorm on wheels.. but they are growing on me.

    It now needs mud.

    Here are a few pictures:

  20. Well I ordered mine (2.0CR L&K Estate) on 7th Feb, it was built week 15 (11th April) and arrived with the dealer today (13th May) and will be delivered to me next Friday.

So just under 4 weeks from factory to dealer, depending on how early in the week it was built.

Have to say i'm quite surprised how quickly it's arrived, given some of the horror stories I've heard!

I ordered my Scout (2.0 CR) on Sept 23rd, it was built sometime during week 17, arrived at the dealer on May 10th (Tuesday) and I am picking it up tomorrow morning. Finally..

  21. :) Ordered since last November, the new Scout has come at last to replace, well, the old Scout that clocked up 120,000 miles in 3 years and sadly has been the most unreliable car I have ever owned. But, as it is the only car around that does what I want at that price I got another - hopefully they will have ironed out the problems in the revision!!

    Yes I am a forester!!!

very smart and clearly where it belongs.

are those the polished proteus wheels? Our Scout should arrive next week - ordered in September so yours was quick

  22. ???Facelift model, I thought we currently were on the FL model, is there ANOTHER facelift coming out or do you mean the change from MY11 to MY12?

As an aside, my petrol scout order was pushed back to week 33 from an original week 17-21, this was then brought back to week 28 then last week I got an email saying it was week 21. I was led to belileve week 22 was the changeover between MY11 to MY12, I wonder if this is significant in my new build week?!?

that's news to me too. Maybe they meant the new Skoda logo which I think will be introduced this summer?

My Diesel Scout is finally on its way to the UK having ordered in September. I think it will be an other week or so before its on our drive but I intend to post some pictures when its there. Having seen only three FL Scouts in the flesh in the last 7 months, I have certainly been on the look out for pictures of that illusive beast and have always appreciated pictures and reviews from new owners on this forum.
