  1. you're right, it is a poor show, i was mighty suprised they didn't take a reference photo at least, at the end of the day it sounds like they should have just got new badges in the first place instead of trying to save the old ones, and if they'd have done that it would have no doubt have been added on my bill - they didn't include replacement badges in the quote, so if i take it back or do it myself, its still going to cost me, so its a lesson learnt, and if i fix it myself, i know its done right

  2. My Octy has been in the bodyshop this week for a repair of a dent on the boot lid lip that i did about 18 months ago and never got round to doing anything about

The dent itself was right under the Octavia word badge, although the badge itself wasn't damaged - here's a pic i took at the time

Anyway, the bodyshop that did the job was one of these independent crash repair places - Just Car Clinic in Durham. and they've done a great job on the bodywork repair but then they made an absolute hash of putting the badges back on - firstly they put the Octavia AND the MPi badge both on the same side, and second, they were rather crooked.

I voiced my displeasure asked them why they didn't use a reference or take a photo before they started, and i even went out and took a pic of a similar octavia in a car park to show the badge position so they could correct it

They took the badges back off and refitted them and they are now in the right place, and better, but the individual letters still aren't quite straight, and its pretty obvious that the badges have been off and replaced, and it just makes me think its obvious that its had some body work repairs. i think the badges themselves have suffered a bit for being on and off and on and off and on again too

anyway, i figured that i could keep rejecting it and the garage would keep trying to bodge it and never make it any better, so i decided to let it go, get it home and do the job properly myself.

So now i have two questions

    1) how do i get the badges back off again safely without damaging the body work (i wish i'd told the garage just to leave them off)

    2) can i get a template or guide for fitting the individual letters nicely lined up?

  3. So i'm driving home in heavy snow, and all of a sudden the windscreen wipers get tangled up with each other.... no other choice but to switch them off, but fortunately i wasn't far from home and i could just about see, so i kept going

when i got home, i check it out and find that the nut holding the drivers side wiper on is very loose and as a result the splines on both the wiper arm and the splined shaft out of the wiper motor have worn down to almost smooth, hence why the wipers got tangled up

my first thought is how this has happened, the car is less than two years old, i've never touched the wipers before and they've never been used excessively - ie no daft stuff like using them to clear snow and ice off the windscreen or anything like that

It looks like its been slipping slightly for a while and working loose and destroying the splines etc. i'm wondering if its possible that the nut was never tightened properly when new - but if so, would it really take nearly two years to develop into a fault?

i'm hoping its covered under warranty, but my local Skoda dealer can't do anything for me til Monday morning when their parts and service dept opens again - which is useful given the current weather and the fact the broken wiper is the drivers side.........

  4. had mine back to the garage that changed the switch today, they've fitted another switch and its working fine now, and the EPC light has gone off.... the only difference is this time they have used an original Skoda/Volkswagen Group part, and last time they used an aftermarket part from Andrew Page's

will have to wait and see if its gone for good, but so far so good

  5. my wife is currently driving her mums car on a long term loan, its a 56 reg Fabia 1.2 htp .... and has exactly the same issue as yours - EPC light came on, local independant garage diagnosed it as brake switch, replaced brake switch and the EPC light went off, but in the time it took to drive home, it came back on. we went back to the garage and they hooked it up again and told us it was still flagging a faulty brake switch although they confirmed the switch was definitely working, they've said they'll keep it in for a day sometime soon and have a good look at it, in the meantime the EPC light was on/off intermittently for a while and is now back on all the time

  6. well my 1.6mpi is now a year and 11,500 miles old.

still enjoying it, but i'll be looking with something with more grunt and much better economy when i come to change it in another two years.

didn't enjoy paying £195 for a tax disc the other day either.

still, its a nice car and it was a cracking deal when i bought it.

  7. Almost 19000 miles is pretty good for a variable service interval I believe the average people tend to get is around 18k and although I have managed 23k on one occasion I think getting over 20k when doing mostly town driving is pushing it a bit.

is that not for a diesel tho? mine is a petrol and pre tsi, I wouldn't expect to be getting 18/20k out of it, much as i'd like to

  8. I'm just after a bit of info on how the variable servicing wotsit does its calculation

my 11 plate 1.6MPi SE has now done about 7700 miles in just over 8 months since I got it last April, slightly over my planned 10k a year at the minute.

I knew it was set to variable servicing when I got it and thought nothing more of it until recently when I discovered how to check the estimated time until service, and found it was coming in at 10900, which seemed low to me (i was expecting at least 12,000)

since then i've been keeping an eye on it its seen it drop to 10,700, then 10,600 and more recently back up to 10,700

the car is never thrashed and very much driven with economy in mind, most of the miles are town miles with a few motorway trips of about 70 miles a time thrown in

One thing I have noticed when checking the dipstick is that the oil level is right at the low end of normal, i was wondering if there was an oil level sensor taking this into consideration

I suppose I should also consider what the expected service window should be - is 10,700 good or bad?

  9. Strange one this, stereo is still working fine but the screen is just black as if its switched off, the touchscreen is actually still working if you guess right where to press it

Anyone else had this problem? The car is only 6 months old so no doubt it'll be a trip back to the skoda stealer tomorrow to see what they're gonna do about it
