  1. I can't remember that far back, except that I was on holiday that year & enjoyed a couple of weeks in a Chrysler LHS...... As for maturity, SWMBO & I know that we're (supposedly) too old to enjoy our Golfs, we've even been looking for an affordable Arteon as a replacement.
  2. No way Nick, he's younger than I......
  3. Rent a nice car at the airport, perhaps? You might even be offered a Skoda....... We collected a new Race Blue Octy at Alicante a few years ago & put quite a few Kms on it without any problems. Didn't hotel though, rented an apartment so we did have to do some food shopping as well as eating out.
  4. The speed limit in the Uk is indeed 70 mph, however in continental Europe 130 km/h (81 mph) is quite common & in Germany at least 1/2 the Autobahn network is effectively unlimited. (Their 130 km/h limit is a recommendation rather than a limit except where it's signed as such, either by permanent signs or traffic based variable signs.) Since shy's Superb is limited (by Skoda) to 250 km/h (155 mph) it's fitted with the appropriate high-speed tyres & 'tis quite safe at its maximum speed. As for driving in the UK I've been told that the average cruising speed on non-smart motorways is circa 85 mph........
  5. i'd have to find the receipts if I wanted to know just how much we've spent on fuel this year, probably spent more on servicing & MOT's...... We've given up on vacations too, maybe next year instead, as for cash in hand, I've about £6k more in the bank now than in January.....which is probably the cost of said holidays. Maybe next year?
  6. It's nice to know that your Skoda's can be economical, but just how important is that to you & yours? SWMBO always questions why I even mention fuel consumption, she feels that since our total annual mileage is quite low, (currently circa 11,400) & if we can average 30 mpg then we can afford the expenditure. (About £2,100 'ish?) FWIW both Golf's & the Superb usually do better than 30 mpg, but this year our cars are doing more local shopping runs but not many longer distance trips.
  7. I/we used to change cars every 2/3 years, but I've owned my Superb 2 since February 2013 & I still can't find anything to replace it. SWMBO drove it back home yesterday & enjoyed the drive enough to state that we should keep the old barge for a few more years, if only 'cos "it's fun to surprise other drivers". I had a test drive in a '69 plate Volvo S60 last week & 20 minutes later I was happy to give it back to the dealer. At £27k it was a good price, & a nicely-made car but the "fun factor" is missing. As for cheap cars as projects, I do "get it" but I'm too old to want waste my last years rebuilding a car. Been there, done that, etc...
  8. I/we use SD cards & USB memory sticks in our Golfs, but the Superb is too old for factory fitted USB sockets.
  9. I have to use the slot, I don't own a posh 'phone.....
  10. Would you consider a 3 or 4 year old Golf to be "an old banger"? Our Golfs can play original CD's, burnt at home MP3 CD's, SD cards & USB sticks. The posh one can also handle original & burnt DVD's + there's about 11 Gig of space on the hard drive. Brand-new cars seem to rely on connecting to a device for music, just another sign of cost-cutting........
  11. It should also play music DVD's, I've got Claptons "Slowhand @ 70 Albert Hall Concert" in my ancient Columbus, not to watch the performance but to listen to the whole concert rather than the cropped CD version. I'm not a fan of radio music, I prefer to make-up my own compilations + selected albums & load then onto an SD card.
  12. I sympathise, my Black Magic vRS was a PITA to keep clean. The Silver Barge always "looks" cleanish, except when it's parked outside, too many seagulls in this area..... Still looking for a "nice"replacement car that can fit in my 1965 garage, Superb 3's, Passats, Mondeo's are all too long / wide.
  13. It's not a limo, like all Superbs it's a barge........
  14. Wow, I passed my test in Mark 1 Viva, one of the best driving-school cars at the time. (4 on the floor, all syncromesh, light steering & lots of glass.) Better than Anglias & Triumph Heralds, IMVHO.
  15. When wife no. 1 went to work for Ford, we bought new cars (at employee discount) & changed @ 1 to 2 years. In her Motability years, new car every three years & after she passed away I bought almost new used cars for myself. I've owned 2 used Mk.3 V6 Mondeo estates, 1st for 3 years, the 2nd 3.0 litre for 5 3/4 years. ( I really liked that car.....) Now I have a new wife, she was running a 2.0 TSi Eos which prompted me to buy a 2nd car for fun, (Octy Mk.2 vRS) which was replaced with a 2012 2.0 TSi Superb, which I still own (& use). Madam traded her Eos for a Octy vRS Mk. 2 facelift, (261ps after an AMD remap) & she now owns a Golf R wagon. (I'm not too worried about her driving skills........) Whilst owning my Superb I've bought (& sold 4 years later) a 4 year old, but low mileage, one owner, etc. Eos & a 15 month old R hatch, it's been with me for approx. 28 months. I quite like it but I'd like a change, just can't find something suitable. I'd want it to be a VAG product, but an Audi S3 isn't a real improvement of the Golf, a Leon ST is too cramped for me, never fancied a Mk. 3 vRS, & the Mk. 8 Golf is just a cheap joke. (IMVHO) I've even considered an Arteon, a Passat Estate (probably a 272ps R-line edition) or a decent Superb 3, but they're all a tight fit in my garage. We've thought about a quick SUV, but they don't make sense as a Golf replacement Still, at least we can, & do, enjoy what we have.........
  16. I bought a 2012 Superb Elegance in 2013, (when it was 9 months old), it's the 2.0 TSi with the 6-speed DSG. Current mileage is 37,200'ish, long-term petrol consumption is 35+ mpg, no problems with engine or the DSG, ('cos it's serviced every year, anything that needed to be done has been done) & it's a really nice car to drive. I've never owned a car for 7+ years before & I'm struggling to find a suitable replacement, because it has space, decent handling, 'tis quiet & comfortable + it's much quicker than it looks (= "fun-factor") ! I've owned 2 VW's since I bought the Superb & it's still our "car of choice" for most journeys even though we do have quicker & newer cars to play with. We've owned 2 other cars with 2.0 TSi engines + the 6-speed DSG, again if serviced properly at sensiblee intervals, no problems at all. One point to remember, if you have a decent independent VW /Audi specialist near you, they will be very happy to maintain a Skoda, it's a VAG brand with much commonality of parts. I'm convinced that the 2.0 TSi Superb 2 is the best engine choice, quicker & quieter than the diesels, nearly as quick as the 3.6 V6 petrol but much cheaper to run / maintain. Just my thoughts of course, but if I/we didn't like the car it wouldn't no longer be with us. (It has its own garage too......)
  17. Thanks for the pix, but those wheels are so ugly!
  18. FWIW, 17k miles is about right when using the factory-fill long-life oil. My personal choice for all of our cars was to switch to VW 502 spec. 5W40 oil, & change it every 12K miles or 12 months. Yes, it's going to cost more, especially re, labour & oil filters but if you purchase your own oil (& can persuade the garage to use it) it's not so expensive. I'm currently using Shell Helix, delivered free from Europarts, Car parts for less, etc. I've had £90 deducted from an oils service bill (VW dealer), 2 x 5 litres of oil cost me £39. Your Superb takes approx 5.5 litres, so next years service will only 1 x 5 litres to be purchased....
  19. No worries, that's it how it works on our Golfs.
  20. If the Autohold system is switched on, it sometimes helps if you apply firm pressure on the brake pedal. Releasing said pressure should = the car won't move & the RPM's drop to the normal idling speed.
  21. No need to press the Autohold button to release it when in "D", just depress the gas pedal. The system just depressurizes the brakes, unlike when using the parking brake, where the motors have to unwind the rear calipers.
  22. You're leaving? Selling all your Skoda's & moving to a rival brand?, Or, is there a limit (annual or otherwise) to the quantity of posts per member?
  23. Enjoy your trip, but there will always be idiots on the M6!
