  1. Wow. Old thread. That was our 2nd Yeti, which in 2018 went in for a Karoq. Still using Smartlink/AA, now mainly for Waze but increasingly for music streaming. Currently trialling Spotify Premium, Amazon Music HD, and Tidal. Love the offering from the last 2 but TBH my ears and car/home kit likely only justify Spotify's 320/MP3. So after the trial I'll probably stick with that.

We are doing a 2000 mile round trip in three weeks to Croatia and back with a 6 year old and Amazon Prime and Netflix so hopefully 100Gb should be enough to stream some movies but I will try to download on to SD as much as possible before hand.

Ah, video will do it. Understood. Enjoy the trip 👍

Cheers for that. This option is now redundant for me. I just got an amazing deal from Vodafone for unlimited minutes and text and 100gb of data a month for £24 a month so I will use my phone as a hotspot.  Thanks for the info.

Can't imagine getting anywhere nr 100Gb a month. Even using AA/Waze between here and Como/Milano and back I've only used a few gig. We do mainly play music from the SD card though.

Sounds like in my case I wouldn't need a wireless dongle then. I would always just use Carplay for Satnav, and the music is through Spotify anyway (all on my phone).

I've been looking at the right angled USB connectors too but will check it out before I splash the money. I kind of think i'd be leaving open the little door anyway and I already have a regular straight kevlar cable.

Picking up my Karoq this afternoon :)

Re cables/adaptors, it's worth a play. I didn't want a cable plugged in vertically. Equally, orientation of USB locators and type of phone socket are variables. My phone uses USB-C do that's one variable removed.

    Enjoy the car!

    These are my reasons.

Not having such a generous data allowance I was always finding when I ariived home and checking emails etc I was using data instead of wifi. If the mifi is on then the car seems to connect to the internet and traffic much faster. When I stop for a break I don't have to switch the phone hotspot back on when I climb back into the car...

I guess it must be different phones/different practices.

When I walk in the house the phone automatically switches from 4G to home wi-fi. Same with John Lewis, M&S wi-fi etc, although we'll be on LNER today and I know I'll have to login even tho I'm a regular user. Just the way a site sets it up I guess.

I rarely change any settings. It just does what I want.

But I can see the use for mi-fi if the phone allowance is small or the rates higher 👍

  6. On my Pixel phone, Android Auto launches automatically as soon as it's connected to the USB socket. A wireless option is rolling out but I like the charging over the cable.

AA gives me GM or Waze nav, calling/msgs options, and a range of audio/music services.

I can also use the older Mirrorcast option, which literally mirrors whatever's on the phone screen.

I have a 26Gb plan. I've never really seen the point in an additional mi-fi device.

I tried a usb hub with a memory stick containing music and no joy, it didn't find the music. Just an experiment for me as I put all my music on an sd card in the glove box. I thought about a usb data dongle but apart from the aggro of pushing it in every time as otherwise it would always be on decided it was easier just to use my phone as only needs one finger tap to switch hotspot on  and it seems to work perfectly.

I'm the same. We do stream music via Android Auto but mainly via the SD card.

Probably adds little to the sum of human knowledge, but just out of interest I tried a Transcend USB stick with SD/micro SD card slot I'd bought last year for the holiday hire car. Not knowing whether it'd have a card slot, but expecting it'd have USB at least, and wanted to cover all the bases. Took the SD card from the Karoq, and it worked a treat in that car, displaying fine on its screen,

No joy with it in the Karoq though. Couldn't even test it. The orientation of the USB tab locator meant the card faced left and fouled the console before the stick went right in. Might be different with other USB card readers.

  8. It's what works for you. Our needs these days, after 2 1.2 DSG Yetis, another DSG 1.0 Karoq is fine. And this is in a hilly area. But our distance touring with cases etc are probably over.

    Horses for courses.

Be careful when programming waze. When programming quickest route it may well take you down single farm tracks. Last time I used it in wales, I was behind a horse fore two miles before being able to pass safely.

Can't actually see a "quickest route" setting in Waze but thanks for the tip. Can see "Unpaved roads - Don' t allow" set to on. TBF never had an issue with Waze and it's my preference over Google Maps

I'm sure I'd be more than happy with the 1.0 motor, it's the effect the WLTP revision might have had on the units being manufactured / made available to order from this week that worries me.....test driving a 1.0 today isn't necessarily the power unit that will be in the motor when eventually delivered, if you get my drift.

Have the 1.0 engines always had the particulate filter fitted or is that an addition as from now?

    Ah, OK, gotcha.

    Pass.

It's stuff like this which just makes me want to rent cars in future.

This 'unknown' situation now developing is a worry...…..a recent test drive in a 5 month old 1.0 DSG Karoq was enough to convince me the small engine is sufficient for my needs but laying the money down on what might turn out to be a seriously hampered and or throttled WLTP power unit takes a leap of faith I'm not sure I have...……..

We've had ours 9 months and after two 1.2 DSG Yetis have no concerns. But there's usually only the two of us and our days of using up capital on cars are gone. I'd rather any issues become someone else's problem.

In order: the phone only pairs to the head unit occasionally, it sometimes takes and receives calls and it gets fussy about music and 9/10 times will display the previous song name and artist than the one you're actually listening to. I think they are clutching at straws because if they give the phone excuse then they might be able to class it as "solved" on their end and not have to fix it any more. It's a 3 month old car and I've had enough.

    I agree. Give em hell.

  13. Can't speak to the 1.5 but we had two 1.2 Yetis before the 1.0 karoq and notice no difference. There's normally only the two of us but we regularly punt up and down to the smoke on the M1 fully loaded and it's been fine. The Karoq *feels* more refined too.

    All have been DSGs.

  14. Sounds to me like a fault. Ours is a Bolero though, although that shouldn't make a difference.

We have BT always on on my Pixel 2XL and my wife's S8 and they both connect as soon as we get in the car and switch on the ignition.

Android Auto is (for now) a cable connection and makes some use of BT to do what it does. Whichever phone we use for the AA apps it "locks out" the other for BT. Quite why I don't know, other than it regarding the cable connected phone as having priority.

Just means the other has to use the handset to answer etc.

It helps keep the flies out of the cabin when the boot is up:biggrin::biggrin:.

I actually like it, it gives more clearance when loading the boot, and is much easier to unclip/remove if not needed. I have also made a rigid shelf that hooks on the bag hooks if you need a proper table. (I use the car as 'home' for a few days at Le Mans 24 hrs each year). And, yes, I can remove it for travelling.

Good point! International maps on Google maps. My wife was just talking about driving to somewhere in Europe!

I do like GM but prefer the Waze app (Google product, so supported in AA) because of the "crowd-funded" feature.

In the Yeti it got us south and east across to Como and down to Milan, and due south and west to the Dordogne.

Those days are probably over for us now but in the Karoq they'd be a nice run in comfort.

    Go for it

Good you found that - I won't be spending too long trying to make the likely impossible happen. In reality I don't think I'd use it much anyway. Don't fancy plugging in my phone in and out. For the same reason I thought having inbuilt satnav in the early days was the best thing so I could stop carrying my TomTom around. Now I am thinking do I want to keep my dash cam in the car and not take it in and out. Thieves must understand they cost peanuts (mine £30) unlike a £300-£1K phone.

Sorry it looks like it won't work for you, but I rate AA highly. Aside from the hardware saving it's always up to date, gives a choice of nav, and audio streaming too.

Anything that gets us in and out of Milano without a scratch will do for me ;)

But TBF, its value is less for anyone with nav built in.

It is a recent phone yep and Android Auto installed fine.

I could try a different USB cable and a long press on the Amundsen on/off button to restart the system next.

Worth a go with a different cable (they always come in for something)  but after further research I fear i may have misled you, if this issue still exists:

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/android-auto/android-auto-general/android-auto-compatible-huawei-phones-t3744725

I'd assume being able to run AA on it meant that it would run AA on the car screen, but maybe not. Running it on the phone means you get Waze and the rest  but on the phone - so in a holder I guess.

    Apologies. Good luck.

Thanks. I think the Huawei might not be supported. Found this compatibility site

    https://compatibilitylist.skoda-auto.com

Although there isn't my phone model, the earlier models don't seem to support mirror link either. Doesn't mention smartlink though.

The Huawei mate 10 is a reasonably recent phone, no? It should be fine with AA. My Pixel 1 from 3 years ago was, although that's not a surprise, being Google kit.

The key thing is that the phone supports AA. If it will instal the app from Google Play it should work?

The compatibility thing from Skoda I believe is more to do with their own apps, but stand to be corrected.

Mirrorlink is an android only semi-dumb mirror app which pre dates the safety orientated newer formats like Apple CarPlay and AA. They are designed so that control is handed over to the car. Mirrorlink simply mirrors what's on the phone screen, AFAIK. Handy for apps not suppprting AA, but not as safe - and perhaps illegal whilst driving?
