  1. Letting go of my Fabia 2.0 MPI Elegance finally due to an upgrade. There aren’t many of these left on the road so it would be nice if it went to a Skoda enthusiast. Admiral Blue. Approx 123500 miles, new front-right tyre and newish rear-left tyre, 15-inch alloys, full-size spare. Pioneer MVH-350BT head unit with Bluetooth, USB and external mic. Upgraded front speakers. Aircon recharged last Sep, MOT to Oct 2019. Towbar with 7-pin electrics. Note that the rear-left ABS sensor needs replaced and the calliper has seized. Still drive-able but obviously this needs some work, so that is reflected in the asking price. Located in West End of Glasgow but can meet elsewhere within reasonable distance.   2. Less likely cause but also have a check for cracks in the windscreen. I had one in the bottom nearside corner and it was really bad for condensation, much better once I got round to having the windscreen replaced.
  3. Hopefully a not too silly question - does the manifold need to come off to change the plugs on the 1.6 MPi, or does the plastic housing come off seperately? Have a had a Google and a poke around but not sure and co of do with some quick pointers. Thanks.
  4. Looks right, tried doing that myself a while back after the first service and did take a couple of attempts. Since then I've used an OBD cable and VCDS or similar to reset as it was a bit easier. If you don't have a cable already would be handy to get for code reading/resets anyway.

  6. Couple of quick questions Nick - it's possible we'll be going back to one car but might need a bit of overlap with our policies being due in a few weeks. Do you have any temporary insurance products (say 1-2 months)? Also, if we're back to having the one Skoda (in my wife's name), could I switch my Freedom discount to her policy instead? Cheers.
  7. If it's the reading playing up, could be a couple of different causes. Mine was the sensor in the tank - integrated into the tank pump, was about £45 IIRC from an indy factor.
  8. Thanks Trevor, that was my thinking too but I eventually got it re-adapted and it didn't seem to make a difference. It's not a big deal but I found a local independent VAG specialist so might call him about it at some point to see if it's just the way the car is or if there's something fixable.
  9. Ha! I was about to say it sounds like a Fiat, maybe that's too unkind. Any Silicone spray should be fine for rubbers and plastics.
  10. Front pads replaced and also needed a new driveshaft. Gave the headlights a buff with the last of my 3M rubbing compound as they were looking a bit dull, better now. Was a good afternoon for it so polished (Autoglym Resin Polish) and gave all the black bits a rejuvenation. Noodle reconnected. All ready for MOT!
  11. Service performed: Castrol Edge, Mann oil, air and cabin filters (splashed out on the activated carbon). Don't do a huge amount of miles so skipped the fuel filter and plugs as I did them last year. Went to reconnect the engine bay joint for the rear washer noozle as I had to do previously but can't find the other end! Will need to have another look. Did get a bit of trim refitted in the boot though that I kept forgetting about. Sleep, Furby and tomorrow you shall be inspected by a real mechanic!

  13. That's a good point, I ended up blowing a fuse when I was replacing mine when I accidentally shorted the socket (screwdriver I think). Also David289 if it's looking a bit rusty then might need replaced anyway - as DubDub says replacements are cheap enough on eBay. Bear in mind if you want a quick swap then you'll need a VAG part as it has a has a different connector (three-wire plug) than the generic socket (not a big deal to fit a generic part though).
  14. Good luck with the deadlock! Had a lot of bother with a Passat B5 a couple of years ago, replaced one door mech because of central locking trouble and ended up deadlocked. Decided to sell it in the end as there was other electrical trouble and I couldn't face attacking the stuck door (ended up with the Fabia).
  15. Furby got a mini-valet ahead of service this weekend and MOT next week, smelling nice and fresh, and almost entirely free of dog hair!
  16. PlusNet here too - was a little suspicious after them being bought by BT but they are very good, have been impressed by their tech support - friendly and knowledgable. When I moved house the BTNI engineer left without the FTTC working, saying 'must be PlusNet's fault', but between us we troubleshooted the issue and worked out it was BT's end, not my kit or PlusNet. Next BT engineer turned up, looked at the modem, said 'not BT' and left after 2 mins (I was out at the time) and PN were very good at chasing it up for me with BTNI. Third engineer actually investigated and discovered someone at BT hadn't set up the FTTC order properly. Hopefully BT will continue to leave them alone operationally.
  17. Could be a few things - battery, dock/lightning connector or a fault on the board (hopefully not the latter). Which iPad do you have, and do you have any sign of life from it at all? The iPads are a bit more hassle to work with than the iPhones given they're stuck together, plus the battery can be a fiddly job on an iPad so you're probably as well getting someone to do it if you're not confident about trying yourself. Try and get a recommendation for someone locally - there are a lot of good independent repairers but have come across a few cowboys too (like anything I suppose).   18. I was with NFU for a while as they came recommended and gave me a decent quote (had trouble insuring an Opel Vectra because it was an 'import'), however I ended up having bother with them. I'd had a gap of a couple of years since I'd had a car in my name, and they said they'd honour my previous NCB, which was about 7 years I think (other insurers refused). This might not reflect their service normally of course (and since it's all local, I guess it could vary). Had a bump in a car park (our fault), wasn't a massive amount to repair the other car but we were told when signing up for the NFU policy that instead of the NCB disappearing when claiming, it would only be reduced next year by one year's worth (essentially sacrificing the extra 1 year bonus with them for that year). This seemed very reasonable so we decided to go with the other owner claiming on our policy. However, when we went to renew at the end of the year, the quote was enormous. Was told that they didn't honour my NCB at the start of the policy, I'd only been given an equivalent discount as a gesture, therefore I had no NCB at all come renewal time. Ended up having to go elsewhere that wasn't quite as expensive. Also, (admittedly I don't have proof this was NFU's fault), a few years later when getting a policy with Admiral, I noticed on the paperwork that the claim amount from the bump was something like £4000. I queried it with Admiral, saying that NFU didn't tell me what the amount processed was (I was told by the owner of the other car it was something like £400 for the repair) but that it didn't sound right. Admiral said that's what they were informed the amount was by NFU and there was no way of checking, however there was no impact on my quote so not to worry about it (basically that it was an at-fault claim, but they didn't really care how much it was for).

  20. Nope, not on my Fabia Kenny, our newer Octy has the pillar button, though the double-press method works on that too. Have tried the fob quite a few times on the Fabia but poor dog still sets the alarm off!

Once thing that's annoys me occasionally (when travelling with dog) about my Fabia is that the 'lock twice' method of disabling the alarm sensors with the key fob doesn't seem to work as it does with our Octy. I don't have any other alarm problems that I've noticed so I'm wondering if this needs coded (or at least verified in VCDS to help troubleshoot if it's actually a fault). Can this option be coded in VCDS, and if so does anyone have a note of where to find it? Thanks.

I'm one of the few Mustang Slayer owners and I have to say I quite like it, though I'm aware the engine has its bad points, and performance wise there's a big difference from the vRS (not that I've driven one, but I gather there's much more to it than just the extra 15hp or so - turbo and torque especially). To be honest, I didn't go out my way to buy one (wasn't aware of that model before) but I was looking for a Fabia, didn't have the budget for a vRS, the extra power and Elegance spec was better that the others on the used market locally at the time (mostly 1.4 MPI and 1.2 models), and I got a good deal on it (£800 IIRC). Good points: Elegance spec - heated seats, A/C, heated mirrors, foglights Quicker than the old 1.4 pushrod models and the 1.2 (plus the 16V on paper) Big lump so fairly torquey and bit of a growl uphill ("good towing yoke" as the father-in-law says) Not too revvy/noisy at motorway speeds Relatively cheap if you can find one compared to a vRS Pretty reliable in my experience (had it about 20 months and nothing major, no turbo means one less thing to fail) Quick-ish but not flashy (if you like that sort of thing) Maybe better for short runs than the diesel depending on your commute You can pretend it's a Golf GTi Bad points: Road Tax isn't cheap (£220ish? If you end up with the early spec engine might even push you up another band, mine is on the cusp) Not a major performance increase over the 1.4 16V from what others have discussed above the 2.0 8v isn't that powerful for its displacement Probably more thirsty too (though it's much of a muchness compared to our newer 1.6 MPI in the Octy - about 30 if I hoof it around, well over 40 for sensible/longer journeys, usually somewhere in between) Power is smooth as there's no turbo, but tails off at 5000 rpm (3000-5000 is the quick band, maybe a remap might even it out?) Handling won't be as good as the vRS - it's not unstable but has more wobbly cornering than our Octy (take it 16V is much the same though) Limited scope for upgrades/remaps since there's no turbo Heavier than the 16V In short - I haven't driven either the 16V or a vRS but if you don't have a budget for the vRS and see one at a good price then it might suit you, especially if you want the Elegance spec. If you happen to have Elegance 16V or PD models around locally for sale, then it's maybe not so attractive though. If you want a fast Fabia then it's the vRS (remember lusting after one when they came out back in the 2000s, still want one a some point!). Yup, while it's not exactly efficient by today's standards, my 2.0 hits 70 mph at less than 3000 revs (2700 maybe?), whereas our Octy 1.6 MPI is similar to the above, 3000 rpm will only give you about 60-odd.
  23. Had one on the landline a while back - asking for some random person, obviously a wrong number so told them as much (perfectly politely and reasonably). She shouts back, "Well that's no f*cking good!", as if it was my fault!
  24. Ended up stuck in a tailback on the motorway (bad enough, wanted to get away from work early today), guy driving a Superb Greenline wouldn't let me in the queue off the sliproad! Petty, I give you, and only slightly less annoying than when another Furby driver wouldn't let me merge a while back!

Then the last few of mine when she got the Octy: 2001 Escort 1.9 TDi (not as good as my old Escort) 1997 Passat 1.9 TDi (a bargain, still solid at 200k but a ton of electrical problems) Then the Mustang Slayer! Which I love, but would still like a vRS at some point.
