  1. Now that you have shown us what a good idea it is to protect the item, am I right in thinking that this is not an "intercooler"? I always thought that that was the part that kept a turbocharger working at optimum temperature, or something like that.

And that this item is a heat exchanger.

  2. Well somewhat prematurely my beloved Yeti – ‘Snowy’ (the Fuhrer names all worthy cars) has to go. PCP not actually due to expire until Nov 2013 but the Fuhrer has lost her car park space and that combined with one or two other factors means that having two cars would be madness.

What I do not want however is for the better half to loose her ability to drive; took me ages to persuade her into a smart fortwo! No chance of her driving the Yeti despite the fact she adores it because a) it is simply too big – in her opinion and B) if man/woman was meant to drive a car with 3 pedals he/she would have 3 legs. Of course there is the DSG but ‘a)’ is insurmountable and I dislike DSG’s without the flappy paddle option (of course I know you can retro fit it but still leaves the fact that she won’t contemplate manoeuvring the Yeti’s vast bulk….

So, both the smart and the Yeti have to go and a compromise in between has been found. Yet to sign the paperwork but Hobins in Manchester have been their usual helpful selves.

Gold star for the first correct guess.

    Bad luck! Fabia?

  3. I saw three while driving from Clehonger (near 'Erriford) to Gamlingay yesterday. One on Evesham (silver/grey EV59***), one on the M1 near Northampton, heading south (dark blue LD10***) and then a black one in Gamlingay that I've never spotted before.

  4. Fitted a pair of Whispbar roofbars that came (relatively) cheaply from ebay and like the low flush fitting. The silver colour blends in well with the steel grey body colour.

They look good. Which model Whispbars do you have? I have a pair and I want to make sure that they will fit the Yeti I have on order.

  5. My soul slips out upon the tide at night

And on the quiet water lies at rest.

The dark hills rise on either hand,

The moon shines dim upon the sand,

And on the sea’s still breast.

There is no sound in all this silent place

    Save little sounds the sleeping spirit craves;

    Faint music from a waterfall,

A lost and lonely curlew’s call

    And everlasting waves.

For me the concept of those "everlasting waves" brings me great peace, knowing that despite everything, it will all still be there whatever happens.

    Enjoy.

    Lovely! Thanks.

  6. Dear Threeshoes, I'm wondering why, if fuel consumption is the important consideration over travelling at motorway and national speed limits, wouldn't a more sensible choice of vehicle for you be the Greenline Elegance rather than the 170 elegance?

I would have also thought that the money saved in purchase price differential would have covered your fuel cost for the time of ownership too. You may then even be able to consider driving at the national speed limit!

Well, there are 2 points to make, soupafly: every decision is normally a compromise and the 170 4x4 is a compromise between power, capability and frugality; the second is that I aim to save energy whatever the cost. I believe that we all need to save energy to reduce global consumption. I switch off lights when I go from room to room at home (and at work), not because of the cost (they're all low energy bulbs) but because I want to reduce my consumption.

I do think occasionally about changing to a Greenline, but I'm quite keen to have a 4x4; and the 140 is slightly more thirsty, it seems, than the 170. But I'll drive carefully whatever I have, most of the time at least . . .

I'm buying a Yeti over a BMW X1, the marginal cost of which I could have recouped within 2 years of purchase (I get a discount from Park Lane BMW, if I choose) because it is less thirsty than the Yeti.

  7. It is not idea but reality I'm afraid... dry-sump 7-speed DSG can take a lot of less power compaired with "older" wet-sump 6-speed. And this is a main reason 6-speed is used in bigger petrol and also in most diesel engines. In Skoda's case at least.

PS. I actually like 6-speed a lot more. It kind of gives more "feel" than 7-speed.

Thanks, I understand. M-B obviously had a different gearbox comparison.

  8. I'll admit this was an educated guess; my last BMW had this explained in detail in the handbook and I'd be surprised if BMW were alone in this approach, which will, after all, report a higher average mpg (thus make the driver more happy).

Well, I had a 320d Touring (E46) from new in 2003 and was continually disappointed with the difference between the computer mpg and my calculations based on what I put into the tank — the computer was about 5% optimistic. But my current E91 is more realistic and pretty accurate and I've decided that I prefer it that way

  9. The number of motorists who dawdle around 50 in a 60 limit is amazing. They are often blissfully unaware of the ever increasing queue building up behind them.

Well, I'm increasingly one of those motorists. It saves a fair amount of fuel to travel at 50 rather than 60, considering that drag increases with the square of the velocity, and the price of fuel these days has forced many more people to drive at a speed commensurate with the consumption that they want to achieve.

But I do hate a building queue and I normally speed up to the limit if there's anyone behind me . . . unless it's one of those prats who thinks that they have to hold close formation at 2m from my bumper, when I am likely to slow down suddenly . . .

    Chris

  10. So, back to the Maxidot. I'm pretty sure that the average mpg reading only takes account of driving time, so it ignores idling data; it therefore only gives you a driving mpg figure, not a figure for overall fuel use. This is part of the reason why the Maxidot mpg can differ from measured (tank-brim to tank-brim) mpg and maybe why it shows "----" since these data are not being recorded.

I think you'll find that it gives you overall mpg, including time spent stationary. If you do as I do and switch off the engine at traffic lights you will see an improvement in the calculated average mpg (I don't think that it's just my imagination . . .)

  11. I had confirmation from MTM that my Snowman should have about 158kw (thats 212 bhp). That is more than 40% over original 150 bhp! Not bad from standard. If i'd have 7-speed DSG I'd be worried a little if the gearbox handles it... 6-speed is OK because it takes much more NM-s and bhp-s. And I have dealers warranty for any problems. Could not be happier

An interesting idea; but the ML270 auto had more torque than the manual transmission version as M-B reckoned it could take it.

  12. I'm pretty certain that my xenons behave as described in The Plumbers link above.

I haven't noticed the self levelling of the xenons but I have noticed them moving from side to side. Not only that, but they do not do it together - if you look closely they are not in sync.

I even posted a video of them doing just that.

The Xenons fitted to all Yeti as far as I'm aware are not just standard ones like I had on my previous BMW e39. All they did was go up and down. My Yeti ones go side to side as well. - 'the dance' on switching them on. I'm pretty certain that is what makes them dynamic range.

I personally think they are AFS2.

Please don't burst my bubble :giggle:

Wow! That looks like quite a useful bit of kit!

  13. Ordered mine on 24 January, spoke to skoda dealer yesterday to see what the build date was, but was told that the factory recognised the order on 2nd of feb, but cannot give me a build date at the moment because the computer is changing over the cars to my13. Is this b/s ? I don't mind waiting 6/7 months , but 1 year would really hack me off.

I'd be seriously cross if the delivery date went back beyond September, for whatever reason. But changing to MY13 might bring benefits . . .

    Chris

  14. There's no mathematical reason why it can't make mpg fuel consumption calculations at rest. Miles per gallon: miles = 0, gallons = ever increasing. Zero divided by anything is zero. Still seems odd that the display can't/won't show zero.

Presumably because it makes no sense to do so. And for your second point, dividing by zero makes infinity; perhaps it doesn't display that because making the infinity symbol would cost extra . . .

    Chris

  15. There is nothing wrong it is just the instrument can only display figures range 1 to 200.

Going down hill and no throttle will exceed 200 over range so shows --- . you could be doing 500 MPG

When stationary you are using fuel and obviously not moving so it will be less than 1 under range so shows --- . you could be doing 500 GPN (Gallons Per Nowhere). :giggle:

That's why the Greenline's switch the engine off.

Yes, I switch my engine off at traffic lights. It can't make a fuel consumption calculation if you are at rest: it's miles per gallon, and that would mean dividing the fuel used into zero.

    Chris

  16. Interesting. If your order went in shortly before your first post (14 April) it looks as if you are now looking at <3 month total delivery. Well done, you! Our order went in at the beginning of April (also 140 4x4 DSG) but we've been offered no dates yet other than the original '6-7 months'.

    Lucky chap!

I ordered on 30 March and was told last week that it was Build Week 34, but "it might come forward . . ."
