wet dog

Featured Replies

I seem to have recently gained a smell through the climate control that resembles wet dog, it's not there on recirc, but is there both when in econ and auto. It's not temp dependent and I can only just mask it with vent clip smellies.

Could it be related to a worn pollen filter if so how easy is it the extract and is the mk4 golf problem evident after changing (failed seal letting in buckets of water a common problem on my 20V GTi mk4).:help::help::help:

It'll be germs on the evaporator. You can get special spray, but I've found turning the fan onto full and squirting Dettox into the vents at the bottom of the windscreen seems to do the trick. Supposedly, turning your air con off a few miles from home to allow the evaporator to dry out will stop it happening, but that obviously means you get hot air too in this weather...

:iagree: - and a new pollen filter won't do any harm either. When was it last changed?

My wife used one of the sprays from Halfrauds the other day for the same problem. It was easy to use and seems to have done the trick. You turn on the ignition, put the aircon on full, set the can off and put in the rear footwell and then close the door and leave for 10-20minutes. Also much cheaper than getting it sanitised at the dealers.

Thanks for the help

Pollen filter was probably changed at last service prior to me buying the car?

It has become discoloured, is it easy to remove?

As for the spraying of the condeser, where do I spray not sure if its the vents inside the car or the feed around the pollen filter.

Get a can of 'Kleen Air' made by Carplan, you can usually find them on Ebay for around £6.00p does the job nicely.
