Whining - TDi vRS

Featured Replies

I have a rather annoying (and concerning) Whining Noise on my vRS

It has recently reared its head, only intermittently in the last 2-3weeks, but has now become a full time fixture

Anyway, it is definitely a Whine, not a whistle, sounds like Gearbox or Turbo

But, it ONLY happens in 4th and 5th gears, and ONLY when the throttle is being used - you can hear it as the revs increase, but not as they decrease

In 4th gear, the whine is throughout the rev range, from 1k right up to the 4.5k area; in 5th gear, the whine isnt throughout the full range

Performance seems to be as good as ever, but the whine is a concern, any ideas? I've searched on here, but to no avail, mostly comes up with "normal" Turbo Noises - but this sure isn't...

Turbos make a whining noise when they are being used, which is very frequent on a deisel. and you would get this on accelaration but not at constant speed.!!!

I know.

Its not the turbo ;)

Anyway, went out to get some food earlier, after coming to a stop, smelt a very nasty oily stench, had a quick look underneath the car and saw the passenger half of the undertray covered in Oil. The Passenger wishbone, the Diff etc etc

So, looks like it is Gearbox issues... Going to a Dealers tomorrow to get them to look at it

If this ends up in a similar saga to the Mount Failure, i'll be telling them to keep the bloody thing and stick it. No matter how much i actually like the car. :(

Aw Gawd, mate - let's hope not, eh?
