Recommend me an mp3 player

Featured Replies

I'm looking to retire my Creative Labs nobad zen extra (30gb) after 5 years of service (mainly because I need something bigger).

I would like 60 - 80gb, it doesn't have to play video (happy with my N95 for that), it has to have a half decent equalizer and it has to be NOT made by Apple. I have a deep rooted hatred for iPods after iTunes decided to screw my computer.

So, suggestions please? I'm not going to really set a budget as I'd like to see what's available before I choose how much to save up.

Cheers in advance!

Another Creative of some description, or there's some tasty iRiver offerings about :)

Have a browse on www.advancedmp3players.co.uk - got an iRiver on there a while ago and was pleased with the service.

sorry but iPods really ar ethe best around, the best bet is to read what it says when installing iTunes if you don't want it to screw you over :)

Another ipod convert here :) I had an iriver and took it back after a day as I thought it was crap. Ipods just work! They are so easy to use and there is every accessory under the sun available. We have 4 in our house lol (there's only 2 of us). My 30GB Video has been with me for a year and a half been half way around the world and back, used regular either in a dock of some sort or on the move and the battery is fine.

If it's just iTunes that you want avoid, you're much the same as me. And as long as you don't wish to make use of Podcasts and the iTunes Store, take a look at Anapod: Anapod Explorer™ iPod Software, iPod Backup, iTunes Alternative, iPod Transfer, iPod Manager, iPod Management, iPod Explorer, iPod Utility, iTunes Replacement, iPod Copy, iPod Freeware, iPod Managing, PC Software, Windows Software, Windows Vista Soft

:iagree: If its just itunes you don't like, get an Ipod and Anapod. Ipods really are the best about

Do ipods do mp3's now or are they still their own special format? I don't really want to convert my library to another format as SWMBO will still be using the zen.

Ipod's will happily play mp3's (I think they always have), but they won't play wma files.

I've got an old Cretive Zen touch (40 gig) and still loving it.

I have to say I've been dissapointed that Creative don't seem to have been trying to even keep up with Apple any more, never mind try and beat them. :(

Nobody else seems to make the big "keep every song you own" size of players any more - especially if you don't want to be watching video/viewing pictures

Seems that if you want lots of space, they assume you also want a frail, expensive screen to watch stuff on.

Hate to tempt fate, but if my Zen ever breaks down, I'll move over to a classic iPod (but I'll buy it in America or something cos they are waaaay to expensive here)

i don't see why people want such massive ones myself.

i have an 8Gb nano and its awesome, i've got 800 songs, 2 films and family guy:blu harvest and i still have 2Gb free :)

and the bonus of it being a nano is its super light and super small rather than walking round with a fricking house brick in your pocket!

I want big memory so I can put my whole mp3 collection on. It'll be used instead of cd's in the car, it'll be used in the bedroom, lounge, friends houses, etc. It's a bit tough to carry round my laptop, external HD, amp and speakers if I fancy just listening to a bit of music.

Also, the way I listen to mine, I stick it on random and see what comes up. Don't really pick what I'm going to listen to.

1) Get an iPod classic 80GB

2) Get a 20" iMac

3) Don't look back...

Seriously; I can understand why you dislike iTunes, although personally I like it, but if you want car compatibility & a 2000 disc CD changer, then you can't beat the iPod classic.

I'm of the same habits as djswivel - random unless I get a hankering for something, and if you know everything's on there, then you know you can have the song or album you really want.

I've just gone over the 20Gb mark (4200+ songs) and still going

Bugger it, I'm gonna have to go for an ipod classic I think. Now to find the cheapest seller...

Issue I have with Apple is how they tell you what you want. Oh and charge you a fortune for it.

But hey ho. People would buy anything if it was given the funky Apple style ads and given an equally high price tag.

Look at the iphone and the smartphone that make it look lame dollar for dollar. ;)

i have only ever paid apple twice, once buying my iPod and the second time buying swmbo's iPod :D

other than that i don't pay them for a thing.

If you are looking at large capacity, forget the POD ( glad to see that I am not the only one who can see beyond the design of these items), as only the original versions have 30GB in them, which is the current size you have got,

Look at the Archos range , as these can go bigger, & do video if you want, otherwise you are starting to move into laptops/ mini notebooks, and not all these have over 30 GB in storage.

My Son works for a large electrical store ( wont say otherwise will be accused of advertising :) ), so if you want any impartial advise around current MP3 players , capacity and particularly reliability ( non returned to store ), then PM me.

I bought swmbo an 8Gb Nano acouple of months ago... it's pretty cool, only problem now is it's got me wanting to replace my 20Gb iPod with an 80Gb.. :o:D

I hate Apple as much as the next guy...but having used an iPhone and my brother's various work's MS smartphones, it's not the iPhone that ends up looking lame. They do have an particularly irritating nack for making things not only look as s****y as hell, but also pretty nifty to use (so long as you don't try to bend it to your own will)

Are you travelling in time & space?

Current iPods go to 160GB.
