Air con slows me down

Featured Replies

Not sure if this is a problem with my car or just all cars with air-con. When i have the air con on my god it slows my car down a lot, no pull hardly at all in any gear and if i don't put alot more than normal 'gas' down when I'm pulling away it feels like its going to stall badly.. then soon as you turn it off its alright.. ?

anyone know anything about this ?

The air con is run off your engine. Which puts load on your engine, which in turn saps power from your engine.

Yup, found this quite noticeably on my way home yesterday, a definite drop in power on my small 1.4 MPI, happily though, not too much of an impact on MPG, only some 3 or 4 mpg over the course of the journey, which, given the temp outside, I was more than happy to "pay". :)

There are local independent places dotted about, and you can buy DIY kits too - although I don't know if they're any good...

air con speeds me up. the cooler interior allows you to retain your composure and driver safer and smoother.

A good few do. My A3 certainly did.

Overall, the effect of aircon loading the engine is less noticeable with a bigger engine with more torque, as the load is obviously a smaller percentage of total output. As far as the idle is concerned, the ecu should up it a bit to compensate.

Mine has indicators that work :P:P:P

And mine has foglights that turn on and OFF :D:D:D:D:D

I didn’t think Fabia had the option to turn the Fogs off, I believe they are called ‘Driving Fog lights’ in the hand book. I am off to see if I have indicators fitted to my car as I didn’t tick them on the options list.

Oh and the alternator is diss’d when you put your foot down too

Don't worry about your fogs Amanda, as you drive in your own exclusive lane there should be no one behind you to complain :P

Good point well made:thumbup:. This is why you fancied a 135 I assume:P.

Funnily enough I can’t remember the last time I used my front fogs, must have been several years ago going across the Snake pass at midnight and I almost never use rear fogs as I am usually in heavy traffic, so I prefer not to blind ppl who are more than close enough to see my running lights. Fog lights are a bloody menace 99% of the time imho

You speak alternator!? Kewel!!

I barely notice the difference in mpg or power when I have my aircon on.

I have it on all day everyday when im in the car... Regardless of weather.

But if it did effect power I would most defff turn it off more often.!

Does the Fabia clutch disconnect on the air con? mine seems to get warm inside when you are driving it hard?

Mine gets so so cold when I drive hard.

lol

useing it today i noticed it slightly but didnt stop me keeping at 80ish on the dual carrige way on the a30:) averaging at 41mpg too! i was well chuffed:D

I notice a slight lack of power and a noticeable drop in MPG with the aircon on.

Never noticed and drop off in power with my old Fabia :)

Or the wife's vRS :)

I can't say about mpg cos I leave the Climatronic in Auto mode. I don't really notice any sluggishness when I push hard though, which might mean I've enough power to make it a small difference or that CC declutches on high throttle.
