Air Mass Meter

Featured Replies

I have a 2000 Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDI 110 bhp with 173,500 miles on it , at the moment it has started to play up and go into Limp mode , when you show it a hill or carry 4 passengers ?, all the clssic signs of a faulty Air m/m , to cut a very long story short , I dissconected the Air m/m , and all the problems have gone away , she is running like a dream , just like new , can anyone shed some light on as to why this should be ?one would think that she would run worse and be showing a warning light also , what I am realy asking I suppose is , if I fit a new Air m/m will all my troubles go away? Many thanks. Keep Smiling

JOHN

They just wear out over time.

When it isn't there it uses default values to guess, but these are not good for the car long term.

Go get a new one as it's easy to fit and only £65 exchange from a dealer IIRC.

HI Thanks a bunch for that Cheezemonkhai, , thats put my mind at rest now , I guess that its no use cleaning it , is it? considering the 173, 500 miles on the car .Thanks again Keep smiling JOHN

A faulty MAF often doesn't throw a CEL indicator. You can try cleaning it (with brake cleaner apparently), but I'd just change it.

The car should run much worse with it disconnected: maybe with a good one on it will perform much better? Anyway, it's clearly stuffed.

at 170k+ don't bother wasting money cleaning it, it will be knackered.

HI THERE

Thanks to every one who has given me advice so far , I thought I would give you the ending to the story , well , we disconnected the MAF , ie pulled the plug out , and the car ran better than it has ever done , although it was quite thirsty!!!but it was great to have a full 110hp back again, ten days later fitted a new MAF/ Air filter , and she runs great more power than when the MAF was disconnected and back to 55mpg, I would reccomend that if you have a 1.9tdi that is running badly or slipped into limp mode ,disconnect the MAF , ie, just pull the plug out , and see how she runs, if there is a great improvement , either clean the unit with brake cleaning fluid , or if a high milage car get a new one , the increase in performance and the improved MPG , it will pay for itself in no time at alll with fuel the cost it is !!! just my thoughts on 175k Octavia 1.9 tdi Keep Smiling JOHN Just got to sort the indeterminate starting out now!!!
