Cracked windscreen - again

Featured Replies

Well, I got in the car this morning and noticed a 1/2in cross crack right in the middle of the windscreen. There is a chip in the middle

I do remember a stone or two hitting the windscreen on a drive a few weeks ago, but I did not see any chips afterwards, do you think it is possible that a very small chip (not noticed before) has propagated over 2 weeks?

Unless someone has thrown stuff/shot at the car overnight... sorry, getting paranoid since this is my 2nd windscreen in 8 months, the previous one being shot at with an air rifle from a motorway bridge in Netherlands.

Anyway, insurance notified, passed details to German windscreen fitter, hopefully will fix it today or tomorrow, stlg60 excess (and it's a heated windscreen so I saved more than my insurance is worth this year already).

The trouble is, on Thursday I have a 1000 mile drive to Italy and then a ferry to Greece....I do hope they can fit it on time and correctly.

If this happens again soon, I think I'll start carrying a spare windscreen in the car at all times. Or put a polythylene film over the fitted one

Bad luck. Remember that a Passat screen fits the Superb if you break one in the back of beyond.

rotodiesel.

Sorry to hear about that. Same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. I had a little chip in the top right hand corner. One morning I came to me car and there was 15 inch crack. Only difference on that night was the temperature (much colder than nights before)

Vectra's are terrible for this, I didn't think the Superb suffered from it.

I didn't think the Superb came with heated front screen? Was this an after option or what?

Regards

John

It was an option if you knew where to order :)

I imported my car from Ireland, you could add just about any extra to it, e.g. heated seats front and rear on velour upholstery, HD suspension (with underbody covered with plastic/glass fibre guards) and so on, and it came with much better stereo than the UK ones. Price after all tax and exchange + trip costs was the same as in UK, but in the UK you could not get any of these options on Comfort trim, and heated windscreen was not available on any trim.

Downsides (for me, anyway) were mandatory wood trim for Comfort, and the amplifer in the boot takes up usable luggage space

Anyway, back to the topic of thread, Wintec called me, found the correct windscreen and someone will call again to make appointment for tomorrow morning to replace it.

You could always swap it over with someone with a Comfort fitted with the normal 'metal' trim.

As you do

Think yourself lucky, I have just signed of authorisation for 12K for a screen change :(

No, not the QE2 as you have worked out, and not a plane :)
