Favorit gearbox options?

Featured Replies

Hi,

What are the cross-compatibilities between Favorit and Felicia when it comes to gearboxes? Apparently the 1.3MPi box is a direct swap for the 1.6 (and thus VW 'big block' bolt pattern), but how about the 1.3SPi box from a very late Favorit? Is that VW bolt pattern?

Failing that, I'm guessing a Felicia 1.3MPi box will be a direct replacement for the 1.3SPi box? I'm also toying with the idea of a diesel box (strength ;)), but I suspect the ratios will be shorter if I keep a 1.3 box of some form.

Thanks! :)

all of the skoda gearboxes will interchange, 1300, 1600, and 1900 diesel, they all have the same belhouse pattern, the diesel box isn't any stronger than the rest, it is identical in every way except it has a different crownwheel & pinion..

and aside from that, the 1.6 is a small block pattern, the skoda gearboxes arre fitted to the engine via a 2cm adaptor plate, the one from a 1.6 felicia fits onto all of the small vw engines, the adaptor plate from the diesel felicia fits onto all of the 'big' engines including petrol models except the vr6 engine

here's the diesel adaptor plate, basically all it does is changes the stud pattern so a sokda gearbox will fit it, i haven't got a pic of the one from a 1.6, when it stops raining i'll go outside and take a picture of one

Thanks! Loads of useful info there. :)

I'm a bit confused as to you saying the 1.6 is a 'small' block. When I had Mk1 Golfs we always referred to anything over 1.5 as a 'big' block, with the various 1100 and 1300s being 'small'. Saying that, I'm not familiar with the AEE. Will I definitely need the diesel adaptor for mounting 'big' blocks onto the 1300 box?

I've got the part numbers for them anyway (they're listed as 'intermediate flange') and at the prices quoted in the catalogue it doesn't seem worth plodding round scrappies or even machining one up. Saying that, I don't know whether they will still be stocked.

the old school mk1 golf gti engine was a 'big block' but the newer 1600aee unit isn't the same type of engine, it is a 'small block' engine..

which engine are you planning to fit to it??

the intermediate flanges are no longer available from skoda so you'll have to get one from a breaker... if it's the 'small block' one you are after i have one in my garage

2.0 petrol 'big block' with diesel intermediate flange and felicia 1300 gearbox

Hi all,

Along similar lines to this topic, am I correct in understanding that a Mk1 Golf 1300 engine circa 1982 ish would mate up directly to a favorit gearbox then? If so I'd need the adapter ring discussed earlier presumably?

Reason I ask is not because I'd want to fit a 1300 VW engine, but I can get an off the shelf adapter/coupler kit for the MK1 golf from the US to mate up my electric motor for my electric car project, whereas they've never even heard of a Favorit!!

Thanks, Paul

i'd have to check on that, but i see no reason why not, you would need the adaptor ring from the 1.6...

does the electric motor kit use a conventional flywheel and clutch?? you may also need a spacer the same thickness as the adaptor plate to re-align the flywheel/driveplate with the gearbox input shaft..

i'm not really 'up' on electric cars/motors so some pictures would be very handy

how does the motor attach to the gearbox?? i pressume it has some sort of splined extension to locate in the gearbox shaft??

Thanks TeflonTom, I can see you being a goldmine of info concerning my conversion. I'm putting in a 1.8 Golf GTI motor. So whilst I'm under the bonnet of the 1.9 diesel Felicia, is there anything else I should get? Can I use the engine mounts? The Golf motor mounts completely differently. I noticed the custom mounts in your progress thread - is the engine you're using fundamentally the same block as the Mk2 GTI one? Or will I be OK with an off-the-shelf solution?

what's the engine code of the lump you want?? some will be easier to fit than others, i recommend using the diesel exhaust manifold too because the gti one will have two seperate downpipes attached to the manifold, and there is very limited clearance between the driveshafts and the subframe, the diesel manifold may not flow so well but it does benefit from the simplicity of having a single downpipe, i would say get the engine mount too also while you are there, it may not fit but it might be possible to fettle it slightly to fit, get the diesel felicia flywheel too and use the diesel clutch

Hi im reading this with interest. I have a Favorit and have been thinking about the Golf Gti engine conversion for years now. Will be interested to see if anyone actually does it and finishes it and what problems arose.

I haven't decided on a donor yet, I'm leaning towards the 8v DX though. I prefer the driveability to the 16v KR, and also there doesn't seem to be a lot of room for a downpipe as you mention. I might get away with an 8v manifold with a little tweaking. I'm interested to hear which engines you think will be easiest to fit though. :)

What does the diesel do for a front mount? I've never looked under the bonnet of one. Does it go onto the front crossmember under the rad or something? I think I'll need a similar setup.

no, there's no mount on the front cross member, it's on the end of the engine block and it attaches to the chassis via a rubber mounting

Thanks for the reply teflontom. The kits come both for keeping the flywheel and clutch, and direct link without the flywheel clutch, as you can change clutchless in an EV as there is no engine drag/inertia from the Motor when the throttle is removed cutting the electricity supply :)

So I'll have to make my own up? Or since the diesel does without one can I get away with only having the left hand side one?

there's 3 in total, one on the end of the engine, on on the top of the gearbox, and one at the back of the gearbox

Hmm. I think I've only got two at the moment on my Fav, the left engine mount and a mount on top of the gearbox. I might be wrong though.

Since I might have to add a mount anyway, should I just stick with the single gearbox mount and add the front engine mount?

there will be 3 :o

the rear one, is just to the right of the exhaust in this pic
