Warranty or not?

The Superb is 3 years old next month, and I'm thinking about warranties.

I've done searches on this and other car forums, and have found conflicting comments on just about all of the warranty providers.

Car is booked in for it's 3rd variable service, MOT and "end of warranty check" before the Skoda warranty expires.

I don't mind paying for a good warranty, but I've no idea who to go with. On balance, Warranty Direct seem to come out ahead of the others on the forums I looked at. Conflicting opinions on the extended Skoda warranty on here too. I assume that the "Skoda" warranty is just with a third party anyway (anyone know who it is?)

Would I be best to go for a warranty, or save the money up towards maintenance costs (and the difference can go in the pot towards a new car :D )?

Wonder if WD etc would cover Xenon bulbs (Skoda did!)

I suppose a good place to start would be to get a list of common Superb ailments, and see if those problems are covered or not.....

Any comments? :)

A Xenon bulb is a consumable so I'd doubt it but I guess it depends which warranty package you choose. Some cover the minimum others cover everything, but the cost varies.

I expected the Xenon not to be covered too, but the dealer said that a Xenon bulb was expected to last the lifetime of the car, and therefore wasn't classed as a consumable. They weren't the exact words, but the jist. Think it would have been just over £100, so I was quite pleased :D

I've never had an after market warranty before, but I'm guessing the sort of stuff that is covered is the stuff that's not likely to go wrong. I'd be very surprised if they covered the factory sat nav for example.

For me its going to depend on how long I'm keeping the car for and where I am in that stage. I generally only keep them for a couple of years so when skoda warranty runs out in Jan I'll probably look at WD as the alleged market leader (seem to cover some wear and tear in there top package) for 12 months until I change cars again. Being a fairly reliable car the prices are quite good.

If I was going to run it for another 5 years then I wouldn't bother as the £30 a month would be better saved up, and at least I'll get some value from any potential repairs.

Some things like turbo's and clutch can be very expensive as can a cambelt failure.... not that I've any knowledge of these going in that car.

The common issues list compared to whats covered is a must, since then you are happy with the insurance cover, but remember not to be bitter if nothing has broken since its an insurance policy not a maintenance policy.

My other concern would be once you start a policy will you want to stop (bit like playing the lottery with a set of regular numbers).

Some might suggest the money would be better saved and spent on regular maintenance, and ensuring any niggly problems get picked up before they can develop

I had the same decision to make earlier this year - 3rd party warranty or Skoda warranty (Carplan I believe) or no warranty. I went for Warranty Direct in the end. Good job too, replacement alternator after 2 months paid the first year premium for me!! :thumbup:

Of course some prefer to save the money and cover any eventualities themselves or have money to show. Thing is, would you actually save the £30 - so would you have the cash when you needed it - and what if you need the cash at the beginning rather than the end, as I did?

At the end of the day, you pays your money (or you don't) and you takes your choice.:confused:

reading between the lines, I'm sure some of these disputes are down to people selecting the cheaper cover and finding they aren't covered when it comes down to it. There is also the 90 day thing (no wear and tear claims for 90 days - TBH I wouldn't have expected wear and tear to be covered).

I know a 56 plate owner who got charged 73 quid to replace a xenon in his Superb, and the clowns fitted it wrong, he was blinding everyone for a week.

Wear and tear is only not covered if there is a gap between your warranty expiring and you taking up the WD cover. If there is no gap I believe this starts from day 1. Also on the net you get an extra month free.
