Uh-oh, newbie stripped a bolt head...

Featured Replies

...as title suggests, tried to remove retaining bolt on the AIT sensor without thinking to put oil on it first (I'll definitely remember now), and now the head is pretty useless. (And anyway who uses 5.5mm allen keys? Not me, to my shame). Tried to grip round it (after oiling it - after the horse had, er, bolted so to speak) but there's not much room there and anyway it's round so couldn't get much purchase. What I need to know, other than to realise that I shouldn't go charging in with incorrect tools and no lubricant (motto for life that one ;) ), is can the thread be accessed from within the manifold once throttle body is removed? I have a Memoscan 5053 arriving soon so I can clean and realign TB, so I was thinking I might be able to get at the other side once the TB's off. I was just wondering if there's any other course of action to get this bolt out, or indeed if it can be accessed from within the manifold. Otherwise, I'd better pray the sensor's not part of my cold start/lumpy idle issues (what's the money on 17705 turning up on the memoscan?)

P.S Car is a Mk1 Octy vRS for info. Any help/advice would be very gratefully received... Cheers guys :)

These are very good at removing damaged bolts and screws. I've even managed to undo the dome head bolts on a steering column!

Will your scanner actually allow you to realign the TB? I have a U380 that sits in the car for emergency DTCs, but it won't do anything like that. A full VAG-COM setup is required AFAIK... Having said this, if you clean the TB in situ, I don't think you need to realign it.

You can remove it but leave it plugged in.......No need to re-align then.

It will re-align it's self after a few miles if you unplug it,although it willrun a little rough whilst it does.

Thanks :), looks like a handy little kit to have around at times like this! Might see if "halfrauds" do one, it'd be good to sort this out today while I have the time. My only concern is the bolt seems like pretty soft metal (well I stripped it without too much effort), but I suppose those spiral teeth would do a good job of biting into it. Thanks again for the tip, a friend of mine just suggested filing down the sides to create 2 flat surfaces to grip from but it's a squeeze to get anything around it... Off I trot

This is what I was wondering, I posted in diagnostics querying this function with v-checker pro but no replies as yet, as I saw it at a great price, but then as I ordered it had gone out of stock  . Cue the Memoscan 5053 (IIRC it has increased function over the U380) which was going for the same price as the v-checker and carries the same features: VW Audi Seat Skoda VAG 5053 Professional Super Scanner Handheld scan tool

After a bit of googling and what was hopefully correct logic, looking at Ross-Tech's VAGCOM procedure for the TBA lists Measuring Blocks and Basic Setting - both these are listed on the 5053's functionality. [EDIT: It also lists 'Adaptations', I reckoned all this would mean it would be able to realign as hoped] Hope I was right otherwise I really could've done something else with the £75. Though I'm sure I'll still make that back compared to taking it in to a garage every time I get a warning light, even if it can't align the TB... In which case I'll clean it in situ (thanks @ Fatty5000)

Great, good to know I wasn't utterly misguided... Was beginning to think I blew 75 notes on a fruitless whim  Bit new to all this (as if you couldn't guess!) but keen to get my hands dirty and my bank balance relatively untouched! Thanks again all, no end of friendly support around here
