EGR problem & clunk at startup...?

Featured Replies

Just bought a Fabia 16v 02 plate, lovely car except I'm having trouble with the EGR valve. The light came on soon after driving away. I had the valve replaced. The computer was reset, car fine. next day light on again! the diagnostic is PO40 - EGR flow slow. Any ideas???

Also when the car starts and I pull away there is a single clunk - (only once) that I can feel through the clutch pedal. I think it could be the breaks releasing???

Can't help specifically on the EGR but would be interested to see the outcome/advice.

I also get a clunk at the first pull away from starting - doesn't matter if in 1st or reverse and it doesn't happen when pulling away from lights/junction after the initial pull away. The clunk is not temperature dependent either (i.e. first pull away from turning the ignition on on a hot engine still gives a clunk). Thought it was a "design feature" but would be interested to know if it is a sign of a problem.

I think this could be the pipe that leads into the EGR is blocked and its not acutally a problem with the EGR valve itself. Though I am not an expert, plently of them of knocking around though.

I am taking the car in to be looked at this week. The mechanic is going to clean the pipe that leads into the EGR valve - his suggestion. He has cleaned the throttle body to no avail, however the car does seem to perform better. I will keep you posted...

I will also ask again about the clunk. He couldn't find a problem, but not sure he believed me as the clunk is quite subtle!

I've heard suggestions the clunk is the ABS self-testing. I don't know for certain, though, as neither of our Fabias do it (although SWMBO's is one of the few without ABS, and mine is quite a bit newer, so could have a different ABS controller). What I would say, though, is that you're far from alone, and you can probably file your problem under 'they all do that, sir', along with the kerb-seeking steering!

I too have recently acquired an 02 16v Fabia and was concerned by the clunk, until I drove a lhd german 99 8v fabia and that did exactly the same. As mine has 110,00 miles on the clock and the german one has only 20,000 kms I can only presume it's not serious and perhaps most of them do it!:)
