Airbox mod for VRS TDI?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I recently fitted a nice Pipercross panel filter (PP1621) to my beloved Octy.

She likes it, by revving faster and with almost no hesitations from still :D.

Now, I've read of many mods to stock airbox (drilled, holes with additional intake tube) and I'm just evaluating these.

I'd like a stealth revertible mod .

Any idea/experience?

TIA

Sorry, I don't about modifying the OE airbox and this is perhaps more extreme that you were thinking of, but how about a K&N 57i intake kit? It gives much improved 'breathing' over 3,500rpm.

Hi,

nice but hardly "taggable" as "stealth" as soon as you lift the bonnet :)

I'm looking to figure out a nice place on the front to put a bellmouth for additional air intake. I plan to find a way to remove the bottom (?) of stock airbox and glue there the tube which should be routed to the bellmouth...

I have removed the grating plate inside the airbox (it just rest inside) it removes some 'restriction' inside the box itself

Also, if you look at the OE inlet scoop box, the rear wall of it is open (nearest the airbox), which means air being drawn in is limited, as airflow can bypass the tube going to the airbox - i sealed this opening, so that air being drawn in has to go the airbox and think it has made a slight improvement

I can try to get pics tomorrow for you...

IIRC that hole and the grating are to let water out should it get in.

Hole to let water out; yes.

Grating is to stop leaves, sweet wrappers etc. being sucked up to the filter; judging by what was trapped in mine when I dismantled it.

Overall the design of the OE airbox, cold air feed, debris trap etc. is IMHO actually pretty good, effective and will be hard to improve on. To seal the initial intake giving it a ram-air effect, as suggested by djgritt, is about as much as can be done (I've done this as part of my 57i system, keeping the U shaped trunking to provide ram-effect cold air into the bottom of the area for the filter).

I must say that once I did remove the grating plate and this - together with old paper filter rough cleaning - seemed giving some result. I will open again the filter and remove it :) (I only found a bee inside the filter... and this won't affect the behaviour of the pipercross).

Thanks for the always welcome pics!

Hi djgritt,

well I had some DIY upgrade on standard airbox and took the grating under the filter away. I opened the front intake box and discovered that there is a large plastic "screen" which limits even more the airflow and snipped it away, then I put a plastic foil to cover the rear wall (I did these things after detaching the front intake box).

As a first result engine revs better and - quite nice to have - I have less rpm fall when shifting gears and a better sound, too :D:D.

Just to know, I discovered a second grill in the intake duct after the airbox, towards the MAF.

Besides, this is a completely stealth mod

Next steps would address a smoothing of stock airbox and adding a second air intake. I'd think of adding it on the left :mumble:

Sounds good - will have a further tinker with mine this weekend...

BTW, sorry for no pics, been busy with work etc, just slipped my mind :(

Oh, and for more info, i forded mine 5 times on Monday night, in waters that were up to the headlights, and no issues with water retention in the scoop atall, even with the blanking mod at the rear, which is good :)
