Binding brakes? Hot wheels!

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Having a crap weekend :D

The 205 mi16 starter motor is playing up so I took the VRS out today. After 15 minutes of so I heard a "thud thud thud thud thud" pulled over and the rear driver sides disc is stupidly hot, so much the alloy wheel itself is very warm  I have also noticed a bit of a high noise coming from them lately.

So, i'm guessing the brakes a binding or a little stuck on?

Took it to quick fit hoping they could take a free look and worse case scenario give them some cash in hand to sort it out. Maybe grease the piston up? (I don't have great knowledge of brakes).

Said they don't service calipers anymore, nor do many people and it'd cost £150 for a new caliper fitted.

Any ideas?

Collapsed wheel bearing ????

How would I tell? :)

:) It's common for the pads to get stuck in the pad carriers due to corrosion.

I'm tempted to just book it into skoda on Tuesday, i'm happy swapping engines etc.. in the 205 but brakes? I've never touched em!

Crazy huh.

Dave, easy to fix? I'm just really worried they are going to quote me for a new caliper, disc and pad :(

:) It might well need a caliper, pads and discs, but if it's just a case of checking and freeing off the existing bits you shouldn't get charged for more than an hours labour.

Just take them apart and clean it all up. New pads, shims, discs etc might sort it.

I did mine and it sorted it. Rear discs are super cheap from GSF.

I had a pad fire, followed by the pad material crumbling and falling out! Made a lovely noise!

I blame it on a poor (Skoda dealer) level of 'maintenance' personally. Full Skoda service history..... is that supposed to be reassuring!

The brakes are very easy to work on, it's all just bolts and simple components.

.......unless it's a wheel bearing.

Stone stuck under dust shield? I had this once on a ZX, and the only symptom we got was when steam came off the plastic wheel trim when I washed the car after it had sone a 1 hour trip, so they can clearly get hot as a result. This cut a groove in the disc, so it was new discs and pads time

Another time I had squealing noises, varying in tone, but no damage to disc or pad.

Booked it in to be seen tomorrow at a local specialist (apparently only £30 per hour instead of skodas £60)!

He said it sounds like the handbrake cable is stuck, which is quite common. We will see!

Ken, i've noticed a bit of squeal now and then lately but the only reason I stopped was because I felt this thud as if I was on the white line on the motorway... I normally have my music at a medium level so it may have been happening for a while... :D
