1.4 16v Coolant loss

Featured Replies

Hello chaps and chapesses,

I last used my car yesterday morning, and got in it just now to pop out for some milk, and to my surprise, the coolant level warning light flashes up with accompanying noise.

I checked under the bonnet, and the coolant was about an inch below the MIN level. Does this always mean there is a problem somewhere in the engine, or is some loss of coolant to be expected?

There doesn't appear to be any fluid in the engine bay.

When did you last have to top it up?

If it is dropping first place to look is the rad fan switch, its on the right hand side of the rad as you look into the bay, not far from the battery.

I've never had to top it up since having the car (about 18 months).

Oil level is normal.

I'll go and have a look where you said... back in a minute!

TBH if you have never had to top it up you have done well, some water consumption is expected.

There appears to be a tiny trace of moisture in the area you suggested, but TBH, it's pretty cold out there and I think it's probably condensation. Do you reckon I'll be ok to use the car tomorrow, and just keep a close eye on the coolant level?

Yeah, I should imagine its fine mate.

Thats less that what, half a litre in 18 months?

Providing the rate doesnt go up its fine.
