Test Drive in James' 170CR Elegance!

Featured Replies

Popped in to Allams of Epsom this afternoon. Actually to see what was available for my youngest lad who has just passed his test! While we were there James FORCED me to test drive the 170CR Elegance Superb! I was really impressed with it. It didn't sound like a " box of spanners " at all. Either I'm deaf or it was really refined! The self parking thingy was fantastic. We tried it three separate times and it performed flawlessly. I was impressed with the DSG gearbox as well. I thought I'd read on here that it doesn't have a creep function on it. Well, I can tell you it certainly does! It crept just as well as the auto on my Landcruiser. Overall I thought the vehicle was very good. I found James to be most helpful and patient as well. A very refreshing change

i think you will find the phrase i used was bag of spanners and not box :D

technically i reckon a box would be slightly noisier than a bag due to the spanners rattling against each other and the rigid sides of the box !:)

now you mention it i remember the car "creeping" when i test drove it. but i did also let it roll back when on a steep incline at some lights so glad i ordered the hill hold.

how did you find the upshift on the DSG - the one i drove seemed to change very early and the car "laboured" a bit. I know these modern boxes "learn" you driving style an i suspect the one i drove hadnt had time to bed in as it was very soon after launch when I drove it.

I too have had the pleasure of driving this car!

I found it refined and responsive, with the DSG changing more or less as I wanted it to. I experimented with the paddle shift too. I think you probably have to learn from experience how to get the most from the DSG.

One slight surprise was that it didn't feel particularly brisk. This may be because of its refinement, or that the car was new, or possibly the DSG wasn't yet providing optimum changes. But given that this engine powers a vRS in the admittedly slightly lighter Octavia, I woud have expected a bit more excitement!

Jonathan. I honestly found the car to be very refined. I couldn't hear it while driving along. I even turned the radio off to listen for a rattle! Mind you I do currently drive a 3 litre TD Landcruiser.....and that really is a bag of spanners! ( Although faultless in 5 years. ).

I found the DSG box to be very good. Much better than I expected. I didn't try it on a hill although I will do on my next extended test drive. I thought it changed smoothly. I didn't think it laboured at all. It obviously held on a lot longer in sport mode. I found using the paddles a bit strange but I'm sure it's just practice. I found it to be plenty quick enough especially if you floor the throttle. I really can't see why anybody would need anything quicker.

The only downside I could see was that some of the switches seemed a little plasticky but then I was comparing it to a recent drive in an E Class which would work out at £15K+ more for an equivalent car. I'd sooner have cheaper switches!!

I would like to give the petrol one a go though. I've got to have the Estate so by the time that comes on stream maybe there'll be one to test drive!

When when when.... anyone with more info

Looks like late next year:( ........

Maybe Jonathon would take you for a ride in his 1.8T DSG when it turns up! If you timed your visit right? ;)

The Superb estate is next year at some point, no one seems to know exactly when.

EDIT:- Also I promise I didn't pay Stuart to say nice things about me!

booking me out on test drives before i even get the car !!

i bet you will get my car in and not tell me for two weeks and do loads of demos seen as its going to be one of the 1st petrol DSG cars in the UK !!! LOL

No, I wouldn't do that to you!

I will however have eleven test drives lined up for your first day with your new car mind!

Just checked with Skoda and they say the Superb Estate is going to be sometime in 2010. That's not quite what I was hoping for!

Do I get a test drive in a Superb as well :rolleyes:Not driven one with the steering wheel on the correct side

Why not, the more the merrier (sp?) as far as I'm concerned.

I really liked the colour scheme of that left hand drive one we had, but since then every single customer I've had on the customer thinks it's not very nice. :(

I quite liked the colour of that one, so you're not alone

Going rate for test drives JCB must be £50 a throw especially as yours will be one of the first Petrol DSGs in the country. Plus the reduction in VAT James will be paying you instead:rofl::eek:
