Newly painted alloys - can I protect them straight away?

Featured Replies

HI guys, my alloys are due back from the bodyshop this coming weekend (after a dark silver respray) and I wanted to take the opportunity to use a couple of layers of my Poorboys wheel sealant to coat the wheels thouroughly - my question is - is this ok to do when the paint is 'soft'?

Would waxing them straight away stop the paint from curing or hardening in anyway?

Thanks in advance,

Lee

What finish is on them Lee? Are they laquered? I'd be inclined to leave them for a few days personally, somewhere reasonably warm if possible.

Hi Steve,

They will indeed have a lacquered finish and I think I understood that the wheels are going to be "baked in the oven" (just next to the jacket potatoes Im guessing  sorry, couldnt resist! :P - I guess this quickens any hardening process of the paint to some degree?

Thanks for the reply. I may try to wait in that case - it just would have been so easy to get into the alloys, front and back when they were off the car (car has to be moved the weekend so the wheels need to go back on).

Have they actually been painted mate, or Powdercoated? I'm not all that knowledgable on the detailing front, but as Steve says if they are painted, try to leave them a couple of days, if they are powdercoated they will be fine to wax up right from the off.

If they are baked essentialy the paint is like a thermoset plastic and you will be fine to apply PB to them from the getgo.

Painted with a lacquer top coat, not powder coated. Basically they will be darker silver than standard with a course silver fleck in the mix. :)

Thanks for the posts guys.

Any pics mate?
