Currently i have a mk1 TDi and am wondering what to do when it eventually dies. I like Diesels as i find them more relaxed than petrols but been doing a little thinking.

I drive c15k a year, Diesel is now 15p a litre more than petrol. So i am trying to figure out whether it actually makes sense to get another Diesel.

I believe Petrol is Cheaper to service? but the tax would be more? which i guess cancel each other out. But it is the fuel thing, how fuel efficient is the 1.6. I know it uses more fuel to get around, but does it use so much more that the cost saving per litre would be cancelled out.

And does anyone have any experience of living with the 1.6?

Test drive it and find out! Sorry but it's the only why. The 1.8 TFSI is really really nice if you can go that far but that might cost too much and to run for what you want. Like me you may find the 1.6 (or from Jan 1.4) the ideal car for your mileage and discount diesel because you make too many short trips.

On 95 RON I have been getting about 37mpg but just started using 98 ron and mid 40's. This is A and B country roads. Tax is £130 I think.

Is the 1.6 good? - it's no road rocket but can rev happily to 80 in 3rd if you need overtake (about 4000rpm at that speed) and then into 5th at about 2800rpm at that speed. If you had to tow and or carried a lot all the time I think it would feel underpowered.

Down side it sounds like a diesel from the outside, however I have ordered a under bonnet sound pad (£20) that they use to come with and the diesels have which I am told will help in sound.

Am i happy? yes very much so! for what i need and do it's ideal. Also it's a chain cam engine - no £££'s belts need in a few years time.

James.
