Real world MPG....?

I'm in the process of contemplating whether I would go for petrol or diesel on a Superb II. It can't be a PD engine as I have one of these in Superb I already and it's not the smoothest shall we say, though I guess there is probably a bit more refinement in the Superb II to help dampen down the PD block. However, I understand that the CR engine is a big improvement.

With an estimated annual mileage (having recently changed jobs) of 15 to 20K, given the current gap between petrol and diesel at the pumps being in excess of 10p (which I guess will be the norm from now on), no matter how I do the sums, the 1.8 TSI, whether manual or DSG comes out best once you take into account the extra cost of a CR diesel variant. Sure I appreciate that residuals will be higher come trade in, but unless I really do not get on with the car, I wouldn't be swapping for 4 to 5 years, so I don't see second hand value as being a significant factor in any potential purchase.

I have based my calculations on the extra urban fuel consumption figure quoted by SUK as most of my motoring is covering long distance rather than truddling around town.

So do the extra urban figures reflect real world MPG for those who are already Superb II owners? I see most people have been ordering diesel variants to date and would like to know how you are getting on, particularly with DSG. :thumbup:

I can't say myself as I have a tip box in my MK1, but, two friends have the dsg in their Octavia and Touran respectively, whenever I see them throught the evening the dash reading shows around 37mpg on both of them, where my tip is showing 25-30 depending on what use it's had, so I think you can basically look at it being 10mpg better than an auto and 3-4 worse than a manual, these are real world urban cabby figures, evpect better if the car is for private use.

Prior to getting the new Superb, I was alternating between an Octavia 140 TDI DSG and an Octavia vRS TDI (non-CR).

Fuel economy in the vRS was averaging about 42mpg combined. This was a combination of fast, back road blasts, urban driving and motorway in about a 10-30-60 split.

The Octy DSG was also a similar split, but returned about 46mpg on average. In particular, I found the DSG to be much better on the fuel economy in urban situations.

I have a 170TDI Manual Superb and this is averaging about 44mpg currently. I have to admit that I don't have a particularly light right foot, so I'm sure you could better this without too much trouble. On the DSG front, I don't suppose the economy would be much different, possibly a couple of mpg in it.

Personally, if you are not a company car driver, and you are paying for your own fuel, then go for the petrol.

Our demo Superb 170CR DSG which does a lot of town driving and gets driven pretty hard on test drives I guess by people wanting to see what it can do is averaging 43mpg, it's covered 2,000 miles so far.

But are the above figures taken from the trip computer, or calculated based on brimming the tank, driving until the tank is empty, then rebrimming the tank?

My Octy II 1.9Tdi PD returns 55-60+mpg per the trip computer, based on mainly motorway usage, however, using the tank brimming method I found my BEST consumption figure was merely 52.5 mpg!

No that's based on the trip computer. No one who works in the trade ever dares brim a fuel tank as you can be absolutely sure that the day you brim your tank someone sells your car!

I always go on the urban figures as I've never had a car meet the combined or extra-urban, granted I too have a heavy right foot but I'm pretty convinced on around 20k miles per year the diesel will work out cheaper on this basis. not a lot but a little.

There you made your first mistake. Extra urban figures are very optimistic even assuming you are a very efficient driver. There have been other threads discussing similar topic. Google is your friend.

I've done 2500 miles and average 46mpg - this includes fast driving and daily traffic jams. I've got the 170bhp in a Diesel Elegance Superb II.

Nice and smooth - can't hear a thing from the engine while driving.

I have the 1.8 in an Octavia manual, and avg about 28mpg, but that is mostly city / town driving. On a long run that can rise to 37 at best. The Superb is a bit heavier and I would guess that the 170CR will do "at least" 50 mpg on runs, so IF I am right thats about 13mpg extra. Over 20,000mls that will be quite a saving

We've done about 1300 miles in our CR Elegance. I think the average MPG is still rising as the car runs in and we get better at driving it.

We're currently averaging about 45MPG overall. On a recent long journey we got about 51MPG (with the use of a gentle driving style).

My 170 CR TDI has achieved 54.7 according to the on board computer and 50.3 by brimming. This is over 1500 miles mainly A roads, motorway and Autobahn.

My tdi 170 DSG is showing 47.3mpg on the trip computer over the last 2500 miles (mainly motorway).

On a steady motorway run (60-65mph ) I can get around 55mpg. Faster driving (80mph+) low 40's, and very fast (100mph+ on the Autobahn in Germany) high 30's.

My old Superb 2.5v6 diesel (manual) did very similar mpg. I'm impressed by the new car considering its an automatic.
