Attitudes towards our Estelles

Featured Replies

A trouble shared is a trouble halved....

I am about fed up with car users attitued towards my Estelle 105/130 in south Herts. Yes they may not be the latest shape or style, but that is no reason to give me grief. Even my fellow passengers note the bullying tactics employed by the others. If I leave a safe gap in front on a dual cariageway the Volvo or Vecra behind sees it as their duty to pass me and fill that gap. I get people overtaking just before RED traffic lights and then braking hard. They must have great faith in my brakes. Even when pressing on and fully keeping up with the flow or better the bullying still takes place. It is if they cannot stand being behind a car that is going as well as it is. Motorists with Jaguars or top Mercedes cars are far better - they stay behind and are happy to keep a mini convoy going. They have no ego or anything to prove I suppose. In other parts of the UK it is far better, and my Estelle just gets on with the business of going along without bullying or hinderance.

My estimation of others on the roads has just about reached rock bottom.:(

Just keep your head high and don't let people get to you.

I love the inverted badge snobbery, and would love to run an Estelle

IMO/E that's as much a comment on where you live as anything else. I've never experienced that sort of attitude towards anything "classic".

Ken, yes, it does seem to be worse here in south Herts. Just a few miles away in Bucks or Beds the attitues are much better.

Tom, I do my best - they are superb cars that are fun to drive and keep up with the flow very well. Badge snobbery is something that I have never even felt a twinge of - and hope I never do.

As an aside, people don't push past me in shops or on the street, so why is it suddenly acceptable wehn they are behind the wheel?

Now if you had a more powerful engine in it you'd be able to reciprocate and give the obligatory finger signals to them :D

In my car I seem to quite often experience people in cars like Audi's and BMW's trying to take me to get the next exit on the motorway, while at the exit. I maintain a steady speed but they can't make the overtake and drop in behind me to take the exit. Guess that probably happens to everyone no matter what car they have though.

Only if they're too arrogant/incompetent to actually try and leave the m/way from the inside lane. ;)

Yes, a more powerful engine may help, but I don't mind people coming past for proper overtakes - it is the ones who push in, bully or push in front just for the sake of it that I am irritate me. Those who push in will be travelling at exactly the same speed as myself as I am usually following another car on our crowded roads.

My Fabia vRS will leave most of these types behind, but it still does not excuse their bad behaviour on the roads.

Must admit my estimation in other is at rock bottom too. Particular annoyances are when you are undertaken for no reason at all!!

I would be perfectly happy to be seen in an Estelle - least it would be more reliable than my previous Octavia!

We still havent heard what happened to the free Estelle giveaway.

I like my classics and still turn my head if I see a nicely maintained vintage or retro car.

We don't get old Skodas here though. See a few Felicias though.

Still you have the best combo an Estelle and a Fabia. Old and new.

I dont care about the other idiots on the road as they will be idiots. I just smile to myself knowing I have a characterful car which I have fun working on and driving.

On a diff note I thought I'd show this girl in the office what a Favorit was.

So out came my camera to show her before and after pics prob in direct violation of the office rules too.

Forget them ;)

But then another colleague mentions that a guy in the office has a Ferrari (his dad bought him and he works at the office to pay for fuel apparantly) and this girl started talking Audi S5's and stuff at which point I walked off to pack my stuff and go home.

A good friend, Mike, used to live in South Herts and run an MGB. He used to cop a lot of the same attitude you describe. On one memorable occasion in Kings Langley some guy went as far as to get out of his car and give Mike grief - Mike (who was a meaty so-and-so and well capable of looking after himself) calmly looked up at the guy and said 'Just 'cos I'm wearing a suit and driving a vintage motor doesn't make me a pushover, and just 'cos you're thick and ugly and live in a s***-hole doesn't make you hard.' Given I was practically convulsed with laughter in the passenger seat, it was surprising how fast the guy got back in his car and vanished.

He also had a nice line in irony. One time we were overtaken, pointlessly and noisily, by something really pokey, Cosworth Sierra or Audi Quattro of whatever (this would have been the early 90s). Mike commented (to no one in particular since the other driver obviously couldn't hear), 'Congratulations! You have just overtaken me using nothing other than your wits, your skill, and a MUCH more powerful car.' I think of that in a philosophical way every time someone does that to me!

:) I enjoy my old Skodas far too much to worry what anyone else thinks! Awesome cars and SOOOOOO much fun!

Could this be to anyone in a lower class Skoda - I get it in my little Furby - there is a cure for Volvo and Vectra drivers - an injection (a terminal one ).

As for Volvo drivers , every time I see one being a pillock , I think back to my encounter in a narrow street with one Volvo - I was in firms Transit , had pulled well over with cars parked on both sides ,and had to guide lady in big Volvo through .

Behind her was a young lad in a VW camper - as he passed he commented "Dude , don't forget ,those Volvos are wider than you're average car ,and the drivers are thicker " - sort of made my day

Time to chuck that RX7 engine in the boot I reckon! ;)

Here here! Having said that, most people find my Estelle amusing and enjoy staring at it with a smile. I havent been overtaken much yet because I tend to drive it 'like I stole it' to enjoy the mechanical mayhem and feeling of speed that it gives at anything above 20mph!:D:cool:

never have that problem with mine... get plenty of people having a good look and giving me thumbs up though :) (OK, sometimes they are just laughing uncontrollably...)

man think of it this way... your estelle is OTR!! :(

you'll get attitude like that from every mid-range car driver who has no idea what they're driving so long as its less than 3 years old and they get a free courtesy car every time they have to have new discs and pads every 35k.

"man think of it this way... your estelle is OTR!!"

OTR - what does that mean? Not 'off the road' I hope:eek:;)

On the road I think! Maybe?

I found that many times in mine, people would overtake me just cause its an old skoda estelle, even when i was doing the speed limit.

One in particular really p*ssed me off. A bloke in a Astra was driving like a complete grandad doing 40 in a 60. after following for about 2miles i found a good straight to overtake. I build my speed up before hand and began overtaking quite fast. when we got side to side i noticed he had put his foot down and i began to struggle, it took my ages after that to get past him, but when i did i was that p1ssed i slammed my brakes on pretty hard causing him to slam his on. I bet that'll make the bugger think of doing that again.

Shame i sold it cause i really grew fond of it.

Yes, the Estelles cause bad driving to be comitted by others as soon as they get one in their sights.

I have seen a few off in my Rapid 136 but speed is not their forte - more like fun on the bends. When in my Fabia vRS it is the other way around - but seeing the Ka try it on and then fall away with a prod of the right food always brings a smile:D (to me not them).

:)When I'm driving any rear engined Skoda I'm having too much fun to give a damn what other peoples attitudes are!

You are right there are a lot of ignorant people on the roads, but please remember not everyone is like that.

My attitude, for instance, if I saw a tidy Estelle being driven I'd likely give the driver a wave or thumbs up as in well done for running an interesting car. If you are parked in it I would likely come and talk to you about it, it's got a lot more interest than a Ford or Vauxhall of similar age.

Don't be disheartened, just ignore the idiots and enjoy your car.

Whenever I mentioned my newly acquired Estelle

http://briskoda.net/project-journals/skoda-estelle-1300gl-work-progress/132946/

the most common response is ... 'why?' and to be honest, I just feel sorry for them at their lack of insight and imagination! Though I do wonder if its going to become 'cool' to have an Estelle after Richard Hammond wrote an article about falling in love with one in this months Top Gear magazine...?
