Alloy wheel painting question

Featured Replies

Hi all.

In the process of spraying some spare alloys up myself.

First time I've done it, cleaned them up with wheel cleaner, scoured the surface, primed (24 hours), 1200 grit, painted and then laquer.

I have done them with some old tyres on though, theyre all shot.

How long should I give the paint to harden before taking the wheels to have the tyres changed?

I was thinking 2 weeks?

Not exactly the brightest idea. Paint will be sufficiently dry in not more than 48 hours (If you keep them in a dry and warm enough place). Bear in mind that tire fitters will probably leave marks on your new paint unfortunately.

Subtle, Don't hold anything back to preserve joels feelings.

As said. if they are in a nice warm & dry place then a few days.. trouble with painting with the Tyres on is that you don't cover the rims properly & different brands of Tyres have different sized rim gaurds, So you may see a difference. Home wheel spraying is never as Tuff & Durable as the manufactures/Repairer's but hopefully your local Tyre fitter will have a touch like a Midwife & not do any damage ;)

What colour did you go for ?

Cheers

I deflated them fully and did manage to get a good coat on the rim lip. But I get what you are saying, however the whole point of this was as a cost saving exercise, and £40 to remove then another £40 to refit tyres kind of destroys that.

In total it has cost me about £45 to spray them all, and I paid £50 for the 4 alloys.

They are standard fabia VRS alloys which I am spraying in ford mercury grey :)

:wrthless:

just my thoughts:D

I'll get a pic of a finished one. Waiting 2 weeks before polishing and waxing though.

Here we are.

Bear in mind they will be a bit more glossy after cutting and waxing :)

looking good, what colour of fabia do you have? and as for the "bright idea" bit if you take them to any tyre fitter with a half decent tyre machine they should leave no marks. i certinally wouldnt have payed for them to be taken off then put back on.

thy look good:thumbup:i really must do somthing with my comps and 6 spokes

done my standard fabia wheels 2weeks ago in ford graphite grey looks very similar to yours ...good job mate look good

Looking good

I would love to say something much more intelligent and supportive but alas I'm tired and not entirely sober...

My brain has therefore stopped working. I'll be fine as long as I stay away from eBay...

Couple of pics after cutting paste, ultra deep shine and 2 coats of collinite applied to 2.

One is still hardening and ran out of paint for the last coat on the final wheel... typical.

Have used:

Wet and dry paper grades 80, 240, 600, 1200

2 x big cans of grey primer

1 x big can of clear laquer

4 x small cans of paint

autoglym engine and machine cleaner, a tooth brush and alloy wheel brush to clean

microfibre cloths

I just hope all my hard work isnt in vain when I take it to have the tyres changed

The Fabia is black - Look at his avatar

What colour did you opt for, when you bought the paint ?

Doesn't look really dark, which is what i was after for doing mine.

Looks like you've made a good job.

Almost similar to my old ones, looked ace.

I did a set for my old banger last weekend. As usual in a hurry, finished painting Sunday, polising Tuesday, tyre fitting on Wednesday. I used our local tyre supplier who are always careful and do a good job. They also used stuck on weights rather than the knock on ones.

You'll have to excuse the make of car.
