Greenline worth having?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Am currently on a search for my next company car due in June 09.

I am looking for a decent sized car with low emissions to keep the tax down.

My question is: is the greenline worth a look or is the 1.9 diesel a bit underpowered?

Thanks.

Chris

I'd say it's worth a look.

Test drive it!!!

The 1.9 is far from a fireball, but it is also far from totally dead either. I guess how it will feel to you depends on what you are used to driving at the moment. I know the gearing on the Greenline is longer than in the standard 1.9TDi, and this may make it feel a little slower again, but personally I think it should be fine :). As Captain Sisco says, go drive one and judge it for yourself.

Oh, and welcome to the site also :)

Thanks for your comments.

I will let you know how I get on.

I currently drive a Octy II 1.9Tdi as my company car. After 112,500 miles the 105Ps engine is very flexible and pulls without objection from low revs. It feels more powerful than the figures suggest.

The above vehicle is being replaced with a Superb II 1.9Tdi S in January '09 (built, but awaiting shipping!). I could have chosen a 140 PD, still in 'S' spec, however, this would have meant I would have meant foregoing some desirable optional extras. My daily mileage is around 100 miles which a large chunk of the M5/M42. As such, I took the decision to sacrifice the extra power and live with the lower powered engine, but with the compensation of optional cruise, Bolero CD, three spoke leather wheel, headlamp washers, rear side window blinds, floor mats and metallic paint.

Whilst I appreciate the 1.9Tdi in 'S' spec is not as economical or tax efficient as the 'Greenline', I did not want lowered suspension (having to slow down even more for speed humps!), gangster, I mean sunset glass (I like around visibility and the rear side blinds will do the job when the sun is out), lack of spare wheel (I don't relish the prospect of waiting by the roadside and am more than able to change a wheel myself) and lastly, judging by written reports on the Golf and Passat Bluemotion models the lenghtened 4th and 5th ratios reduce the engines flexibility and diminishes the way the car drives.

It is a shame the facelifted Octy wil not be available with the new 2.0 CR engine being fitted into the Golf Mk6. This is both cleaner and more fuel efficient than the current entry level diesel. Depending on how I get on with the Superb II will determine whether I choose another Skoda in 4 years time.

In response to one of your original questions about whether the 1.9Tdi would feel underpowered, I previously asked this question and was assured by people who had testdriven this engine in the Superb that it was up to the job.

According to comcar.co.uk

Total additonal tax arising from use of the vehicle:

per year: £582.60 | per month: £48.55

Seems a bargain to me.

Just got to find a cheap lease price now as my boss is not noted for his generosity.

When compared against a Superb II 1.9Tdi S the yearly difference is £64.00 (£647.00 minus £583.00), while the monthly difference is a mere £5.33.

Admittedly, you'd want to add cruise and a leather steering wheel to the 'S', as both are standard kit on the 'Greenline', however, in my mind, the 'S' represents a less compromised vehicle (see earlier post for my rationale).

Has anyone got one of these yet?

Can't find a dealer with one as a demo.

Bit too far to travel I'm afraid

http://briskoda.net/superb-ii/greenline-spotted-flesh/134296/

http://briskoda.net/superb-ii/shiny-greenline-spotted/135163/

its in Hortons in Lincoln if anyone wants to see it.

See this link, a dealer here had the greenline in white as a demo, not sure where it is in relation to you... Might be of interest.

Personally I dont see that the greenline offers much over the standard 1.9s, so i would go for one of those and then buy a bluemotion badge and stick it on somewhere if you are worried your neighbours might throw rocks at you!

I'm not at all bothered by the neighbours, it's just that I want to keep the tax liability to an absolute minimum as theres no chance of a pay rise this year. (or last or the year before that.......)

The company I work for is not noted for it's generosity and the greenline seems to "tick all the boxes" when it comes to the things my boss will throw at me, namely insurance costs, running costs, lease payment etc etc, whilst giving me a decent sized car to boot.

Plus there's a saving for him on national insurance if a "greener" car is used.
