Steering problem - feels like driving on ice

Featured Replies

I have a Fabia 1 1,4 2001. When ive been driving around lately, the steering feels funny. At speeds of 60-130 km/h (and sometimes slower), the steering feels light and unresponsive, and i can turn the steering wheel 1-2 cms either direction without much response.

At the same time it feels like the steering "jumps" in my hands, almost as if i was driving on black ice (even though road is dry). the sensation (which is creepy) is intermittent, and the steering wheel will usually have more resistance and feel heavier in my hands.

I do have the Steering wheel indicator light come on now and then, have been to the shop 3 times, without the mechanics being able to figure out whats wrong.

Have searched the threads, but not found any similar problems to mine. What might be the problem? Can provide more details if neccessary.

with kind regards

Anders

Probably the steering angle sensor. Have a search here and you'll find it.

You should get the fault codes read as well though.

Moved too fabia 1 :)

Another vote for the steering angle sensor. Mine went last year and I had exactly the symptoms you describe for a while followed after a week or two by a complete loss of power assisted steering, which I only really noticed when going round right-angled corners.

hi andy -

has a steering wheel popped up on your dash - if so , you`ll need to get it checked out -

sounds like an overactive steering sensor - i know its a horrible feeling -
