Wife wants to change car

Featured Replies

My wife has decided that she is fed up with the 1.6LX Octy because in 11 months it has needed an exhaust, lambda probe, distributer, and repair to the central locking. Also it has always seemed unreasonably fuel hungry.

She had declared that although she likes my vRS that she will not have another Skoda due to the poor reliability (my vRS has given some trouble over the last few months as well). She has also declared that she won't have a deisel as her father has declared them rubbish on the bases of a crap Ford Focud TDI. On this logic she says she wants a city car, and to my horror has become quite taken with the idea of a nearly new Hyundai Amica GSi with air con, electric windows and Alloy wheels. What can I do to change her mind. Grudgingly I am starting to agree about Skoda, the post Felicia models just do not seem to compare for reliability, but I find it hard to imagine a Hyundai to be any better.

Any good arguments in favour of a Nissan Micra that I could use?

Hyundai Amica is pretty good for what it is...*however*, bear in mind that Kia are to Hyundai what Skoda are to VW...

Didn't know Kia was owned by Hyundai. I had always classed them pretty much as being equivalents. Know anything about Perouda (spelling), My Skoda dealer (about to be not a Skoda dealer) also sells them and this morning while leaving my wifes Octy in for its latest repair I seen that they start at

Peroduas don't get great reviews...they really are no-frills, but not in a "you don't get much but what you get is good" type way.

In Hyundai's favour, you do get a 5 year warranty which speaks volumes about how confident they are about reliability!

Hyundai don't make the Amica or Atoz any more so you can't benefit from their 5 year warranty, just what would be left from their older 3 year warranty scheme. Had a look at the Kia website, their city car looks a lot like the Amica but is perhaps nicer looking inside and has a slightly bigger engine. I will have a look at them as they offer a lower interest rate on finance on the new car than you can get to buy a 1 or 2 year old Amica.

What about a nice little CityRover...? :D

I always thought 5 year warrenties were good, but unfortunatly it seems it's another thing were being short changed on as a lot of adverts in the Sates have 7 year warrenties! 7 years that is fantastic!

Is it just for city plodding ?

Do you need 4 seats of is it just FORTWO ?

( Rob got the Smart recommendation in there :) )

Well, yes, the Smart is the best option - possibly not as cheap to buy as one of these Korean cars, but the build quality looks, feels and probably is better, and it's more fun to drive what with using turbos and RWD. :D

Personally I do not think a city car is the best option, or a new car when I consider how much she uses her car. There is a very good condition Felicia 1.9D Gli for sale with PAS, sun roof, c/locking etc which I think would be perfect for her, but she says I am just being mean!

Once I have the money to move on from owning a Felicia, William, there is no way I would go back to owning a car which has its origins in the 1980s - if not earlier. Come on, you are being mean in suggesting that car! :(

Cheap, economical (to repair too ;)), Japanese reliability and very easy to drive. If you're looking at the new ones you could even play the style card, as well as the fact it wishes you a happy birthday and is very well specced for a city car :)
