Coolant temp sensor error

Featured Replies

Hey all,

I had a new cambelt and water pump put on my 54 plate Octy vRS at the start of November. A few weeks later the check engine light came on, and didn't go off. The car hasn't been driving any differently or making any different noises. So far as I know it's standard; at least, Gorner in Warrington didn't mention anything when they sold it to me; then again, the previous owner was Bentley in Crewe, so who knows?

The other day, faboka vrs very kindly met up and did a VAG COM scan, then reset the codes. The light stayed off while I drove it home, but came back on a day or so later. The only fault VAG COM showed was this (transcribed by faboka):

16502 - engine coolant temp sensor (g62) signal too high P0118 - 35-10 - intermittent

Apparently (it's not my daily drive any more) the water gauge on the dash has always stayed bang on 90, even when the light popped on again.

It seems a bit much of a coincidence that this has only happened since the water pump was replaced, but doesn't seem to be the pump being faulty - is it likely they had to disconnect the sensor and it's gone back on slightly wrong, or got some muck in? Or maybe a small airlock?

Any ideas much appreciated, before I book it back in to get them to have a look - it'd be especially good if I could drop hints that this is likely their fault so it's free, although they're generally a really good bunch of guys anyway (I've had hundreds of quids' worth of man-hours out of them just because they refuse to bill me).

Thanks all,

Nik

It may well be coincidence, iirc they are about £20 to buy and easy to change, I also recall they kind of dual purpose as in they feed the gauge and the ecu, so in theory the gaige part could be fine whilst the ecu is getting wonky readings hence the light.

I may be wrong though !!!

My temp sensor became faulty a few months ago. The Engine Management light was on, but the car drove exactly the same (For about 4 weeks), temp gauge, etc all fine. Didn't notice there was a problem with the car, except the secondary fan on start up was not coming on anymore.

Skoda replaced the sensor and the light went off for 3 days. Took it back to find the exhaust oxygen sensor was also faulty. Had that replaced and all has been fine for 3 weeks :)

That would be down too the ecu side of things I reckon as in the car ecu doesn't know the car is cold so doesn't power up the secondry air pump.

Thanks mate :) After replacing the temp sensor it started working again, so Im assuming it was linked lol :)

The temp sensor is the other side of the engine to the water pump and you don't go anywhere near it when doing cambelt or water pump.

I really wouldn't blame whoever did it, I agree with the above that it's co-incidence.

However the earlier (black) temp sensor is a known fault and is superceeded with the green one.

Get a genuine new green temp sender p/n 059919501A and a new o-ring and 2 clips. The reason I say 2 clips is you have to be very carefuly to fully seat the new sensor & put the clip in carefully & equally (it should be slightly loose when fitted, the engine pushes it out tight against the clip when warm) and just handling the clips in cold weather can make them snap.. .I warm mine up with an old hair dryer before I fit them.

It's under the right hand side of the engine cover.

HTH, Greg.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I thought it could be a different thing - I've had the coolant sensor go before, with the more common symptom of the temperature light and beep on cold start, which disappears on a stop/restart. That was replaced under warranty almost exactly 2 years ago at Alex Lawrie. Or is that for coolant level? I forget!
