castrol rs 0w-40 is it good enough

Featured Replies

i own a octavia vrs and want to give it an oil change but i'm unsure wot oil to use, i'm a bit confused about the grades and spec's! i've been given 4 litres of castrol rs 0w-40 and was wondering if it is suitable for my vrs?

i think its variable servicing!

if the castrol is no good wot oil should i buy?

Do a search on the forums... this question has been answered many times... including earlier today!

The oil you use should be to VW506.01 if your Octy is on variable servicing

Spec VW 506 01 is for the PD engine on variable service intervals. The vRS needs spec VW 503 00 oil which, concidentally, comes in the same bottle as 506 00 and 506 01 oil! The following fully synthetic Longlife 0W-30 oils meet all 3 specs:

Aral SuperTronic LongLife II SAE 0W-30

BP Visco 7000 Longlife II SAE 0W-30

Castrol SLX LongLife II 0W-30 (Available from VAG Dealers and Halfords)

Castrol LongLife 2 TOPUP 0W-30

Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30

Veedol SYNTRON LongLife II + 506 01

VAG dealers may stockl VAG-branded and/or Quantum Longlife oils which meet the same specs, and there may well be other makes available since that list was produced. Castrol Formula RS 0W-40 would be suitable for variable service intervals IF it meets spec VW 503 00 - but I don't think that it does.

PS: I use Castrol SLX Longlife II as my dealer stocks it. I have also been able to buy it on offer from Halfords.
