Engine rebuild

Featured Replies

Hello to everybody,i'm new to the site and looking for guidance as i'm a newbe to Skoda's.

I've got a 1989 136 Rapid which need some work.Could anybody give me an idea of what i should expect to pay for the following to be done:

Crank Grind & Bearings

Rebore & Pistons

Head Skim

Head Recon

Oil Pump

Water Pump

Petrol Pump

Full Gasket Set

Many Thanks

Wow...it needs a lot doing!!! Woudlnt you be better off just buying another engine?? As for the price of the machining.....it all depends on where you live and what your local companies are charging. If you need a decent cylinder head Ive 2 lying in my garage in working order...and a fuel pump, would be cheaper than getting someone to recon what youve got. For parts....theres only one place

www.jorily.com

if he doesnt list it on his site, he can usually get it.

I thought that was a liner engine; can you rebore it anyway?

As to the other stuff, I'd be putting new pumps in a second hand engine anyway unless I'd seen it running first.

I wouldnt bother with an engine needing that much work, just get a good engine out of a fav or felicia and swop over the bits. After all its basicly the same engine

Thanks for your input.............how much would i expect to pay for a new engine?

I paid £70 for a working Rapid engine with SK cam in it.......you'd probably get a Favorit engine for even less.

humm... how about a later 1.3mpi with the same attention lavished on it. that would fly!

An MPi in a Estelle/Rapid or earlier would need a lot of electrickery, or a carb and clockwork retro-conversion, shirley?

i dont think the electrics would be a problem. its not as if the rapid has lots of complex sencers plumbed in to an ecu that you have to try and splice in to.

the MPI's ecu and what knot could be kept separate in a box in the engine pay.

Exactly; I think the ECU would get upset by the lack of signals from all the sensors the Rapid doesn't have.

the way i see it is that the felicia doesn't have many sensors around the car nether, the only inputs for the ecu are from the engine sensors.

if you saw the number or sensors on the corrado/R32 project i'm doing, you'd think the rapid/felicia a dodle.

In theory at least, all you need are engine speed and temperature, air mass (MAF or MAP), and throttle position inputs.

In practice (and never mind that it's usually used to get stoechemetric fuel/air) a llambda to ensure a consistant mixture makes life easier.

Of course most Rapids have none of these, and you'd need to sort out the llambda and possibly new manifolds with a Felly engine being transferred into a rear-engine car.

Hhum......anyway back to the Rapid :) Has anybody got 1 for sale?

:)Part of the appeal old Skodas [and old cars generally] is the fact they don't have all those sensors and electronic stuff.

Hhum......anyway back to the Rapid :) Has anybody got 1 for sale?

I don't have a whole engine, but I do have several parts of engines. What are the symptoms of the current engine?

Ive got a whole Favorit engine with the bits converted to Estelle.......but its no use if youre a million miles away!

I'm in North East but do loads of miles all over the country!!!

Not sure of condition of existing engine as its out of the car and the guy i bought it from said it was losing water. Its done 119 K miles so its probably V Tired and i dont want to fit it only to have to take it back out again.

Probably gonna strip it down tonight so any ideas what tell tale signs i'm looking for that show excessive wear or attention.

Cheers

Tony

Losing water suggests either the head gasket, or that the liners have moved.

Was there any oil in the motor when you got it? If so, was there any sign of water in the oil? If so, that strongly suggests liners rather than head gasket.

Also, do you have facilities to do a compression test before stripping the engine down?

Hi Ken,

There is still oil in the car and it doesn't have water in it so think its the head gasket.

I dont have the facility to do a comp test i'm affraid.

Tony

I'm fairly sure about that now too.

Useful hints on dismantling this engine:-

1) Lock the crankshaft, then remove the head.

2) Once you're removed the head, use some bar to lock the cylinder liners down before doing anything else. It will save lots of pain with reseating liners if they don't need replacing.

I'm in Cumbria! hurrah...someone else oop north. Head gaskets are easily sorted....if the crank is ok, a set of shells, a timing chain and a new head gasket should sort it. The only possible problem will be head warping. Ive got a head or a whole engine if you need it.

Hi,

just tried to get the head off and it wont budge so went in the other end and its wrecked, bores badly scored and rusty so iy only good for bits.

i'm most interested in your full motor......how much do you want for it fellow northerner:D

Hello mate.

I'm in South Shields with a Rapid and I've a mate in Newcastle with an Estelle.

We'll have to meet up.

Between us we can hopefully sort something out.

i have a 3000miles from last rebuild 136 engine converted to estelle/rapid running,,,if you desire such a thing (it was out of a x plate felicia) (nearly forgot its the engine pictured in my avatar!!!)
