Mushy stereing and bushes

Featured Replies

Anyone got pictures and part numbers for:

- the ARB bushes & location

- wishbone bushes (preferably the solid ones from the GTI etc that fit)

- Any other bushes that might go soft and cause the steering to go mushy or a bit slow to respond.

Always worth checking the shocks too.

Have you considered using poly bushes. I put SuperPro on mine and it made a big difference.

I can't see how ARB bushes being worn will effect steering feel.

I'd be looking at wishbone bushes as a prime candidate, but also tyre pressures and suspension geommetry. Shockers could be getting nicely worn at 3yrs+/50k+.

Worn arb bushes could mean the car moves around a lot when on rough road or similar which could potentially convince me the steering is funny.

Just something I want to check out really.

Wishbones I will be getting checked and the tyre pressures were spot on and I've tried them a bit up and down to no effect.

Geometry was checked when new tyres were put on, but potentially worth looking at if everything else shows ok. I figure it's not worth getting it changed until the bushes are all checked and changed if needed.

Re the poly bushes, tempting, but they are kinda harsh from what I've heard, hence thinking solid VW ones rather than the voided ones used by skoda.

As for the shocks, car's only done 55k and almost all motorway, so I'd be pretty worried if the shocks are dead bearing in mind the 306 i drove was on original shocks and springs and fine at 140k miles.

I would use polys for the ARB/drop links and VW (or Audi) for the rest.
