Continuous drone at approx 1900 revs under load

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a used Superb 1.9TDI Auto from a dealer (just before christmas) and have a drone that's driving me mad.It seems worst around 1900 revs under load and is there all the time but is intermittent in loudness. It started sounding like it was an exhaust leak so I took it back to the dealer. It's now been back several times and so far they have swapped the Airbox (changed with another Superbs), and replaced the turbo as the bearings were faulty. They say it's normal but I can't believe this as myself and my wife can hardly speak to each other when it's at it's loudest.

Any ideas how I can investigate myself / prove that there is/isn't a problem. The dealer just says that I will have to see how it goes and once it's continously noisy they will be able to find it.

Hi Matt

I know the drone you're complaining about.

mine does it intermittently, depending how the engine's running.

whats your mileage?

has it had an oil change recently? mines on 10K servicing, I'm not leaving oil in for 20 odd thousand, not in my engine..

is the oil level low?

when was the cam belt changed, if ever?

my superb is now on 152K, all the above factors affect the drone on mine, especially the cambelt adjustment, just before the 120K service it was awful.

a fresh sump of oil, and a new belt, *correctly adjusted * works wonders.

Hope this helps

It's service was about 10,000 miles ago (it's on variable servicing), it's only done 30k and is due a cambelt change in September. I'm beginning to think it maybe the airbox but not having heard the sound before on another Superb with the same problem it's difficult to say. The noise sounds like an exhaust leak and seems to come from the area on the same side of the engine as the airbox but below it. If I put my foot down hard when pulling away I can hear a vibration (guessing this is the airbox rattling?).

You could check the airbox is sitting in it's grommets on the chassis, sometimes when ppl change the filter they disturb it and it doesn't sit right, hth.

btw all Superb 1.9's sound gruff and throaty.

Agreed, the AWX sounds particularly harsh when it's at full throttle.

Not that that's a bad thing :)
