Test Drive of SUPERB 1.9 TD S

Featured Replies

I Drive an Octavia II 1.9 TD, my next car is to be the Superb (Due to a promotion) but was wondering if the 1.9 would be OK in the Superb (Company Car) the old Superbs had a 115 BHP engine against the new 103 BHP.

I find the engine fine in the Octavia (except bit rough between 2800-2900 revs) but can now confirm in the Superb it is a bit gutless after 60-70 MPH:( but it sounds a lot quiter than the Octavia:). so I will be going for the 2.0 PD . (as I have to pay extra from my own pocket) would like the CR but I think the PD is much better value and has the same 6 speed box. Think I would have been happy with 115% BHP though.

I thought Superb I's first had a 100Ps and then a 105Ps 1.9Tdi engine? I know the 115Ps unit was fitted in Audi A4's and possibly in the last generation Passat.

Like you, I drove a company Octy II 1.9Tdi 105 which I thoroughly enjoyed over almost 4 years and 115k miles. I now have a 3 week old Superb II 1.9Tdi 105 which has covered 2.2k miles. First impressions are that the interior quality is improved, while wind and engine noise is reduced. My Superb's engine is still quite tight, therefore, it is hard to know whether after a few more miles it will be as willing as the engine in my Octy.

I also considered a 2.0Tdi 140 PD, but dismissed it as the higher monthly leasing cost would have prevented me from adding desirable extras such as cruise, Maxidot, leather wheel, Bolero, headlamp washers, rear side sunblinds and metallic paint. If you fancy a little more power, there are many reputable companies who can liberate extra power at minimal cost.

TBH, given the congested state of Britain's motorway and A roads the 105 PD is perfectly adequate, particularly if you rarely travel with passengers. The added economy of the 105 PD is also welcome when you have to pay for commuting and private mileage out of your own pocket.

Lastly, I am still not sold on a 6 speed 'box, particularly when I rarely get an opportunity to travel in at speeds in excess of the National Limit. In my Octy, I found fifth gear to be very flexible with the majority of overtaking manoevres being undertaken in this gear, rather than having to change down a cog.

I usually drive on the motorway at about 80-85 just where that rough spot is in the Octavia, I have driven a six speed box in a Vauxhall van (previous job) and found that extra gear was really handy and made it quieter so thought the Superb should be the same.

My Boss had a mark 1 and said it was 115BHP on a 55 plate (had a red i on TDI) and it was his mark 2 I drove (also drove his mark one and did not like it). he has said it lacks it bit of power compared to his old car and it has done 5000 miles already. another mate of mine has said the same and he had a Octavia and thought I had probably made the right choice as do quite a bit of motorway driving.

Seems as you wanted the same type of spec as me thats why I went for the SE model, been on order over 3 weeks now so should get it end of april.

if you drive within the law and stick to 70mph then you will be below the "rough spot" :D

80-85 mph on the clock means 70-75 mph true speed so only going a little bit faster!, generally going with the flow of the traffic!

Speedometers usually arent that far out!!! If its 10mph out at 80mph its broken!!

i agree. when i check my speedo with my sat nav its usually within 3-5mph at 70mph. I would never drive at an indicated 85mph and hope that I was within the law !

Agreed. That is simply chancing one's luck. At an indicated 74mph my Superb II is travelling at 70mph (according to Tom Tom sat nav).

Travel within the speed limit and reap the benefit of increased fuel economy.

This week I've done a lot of motorway miles and travelling at around 65-70mph has resulted in 635 miles to a tank, with 35 more until I run dry. 670 for 60 litres of fuel equates to 50.80mpg. Not bad considering the car is still being run in, having covered 2,800 miles only.
