weird web problem - javascript related?

Featured Replies

Wonder if any of briskoda's computer savvies can help me with this one:

I administer a couple of "wikis" for educational purpose, and now and then I do it on my eee (Linux).

Ordinary tasks (page editing, user account administration &c) works great, but I have problems when trying to upload files (simple stuff: .pdf, .doc) to the wiki server.

When using Firefox 3 and a wlan connection it works - but not when I use a 3G modem. Dialog box just says "Pending". Nothing happens. No further error messages.

When using Opera it doesn't work on either connection and I get an error message saying "Statement on line 7: Cannot convert undefined or null to Object" and then some blahblah.

This might be Opera specific.

On a Win pc (and FF3) uploads work OK on a 3G modem.

Sounds like a DNS issue with your 3G provider

Can you either post the source of the page or a link to the page such that we can go to it and view the HTML/javascript source and diagnose line 7 from there.

OK, here's a printout of the source code of the upload page (upload button on top of page 2)

sourcecode.pdf

gadgetman's DNS suggestion - in that case it wouldn't work on a Win machine either, would it?

The windows machine and 3G machine will have different DNS servers so one of them could well be wrong. However the fact you found the site suggests it's at least partly correct.

What is the 3G device? A usb modem you plug into the EE?

I think the error is opera specific, so I shouldn't worry about that. Looks like the JS might have a piece of code that is formed aimed at windows specific with an if statement that is commented out.

From the EE with the 3G item can you browse directly to to http://vs1.pbwiki.com/layout/js/packed-v0903041216277751.js and the other one below it?

Yes. Attached what displays when connecting to the two URLs.

URL1.txt

URL2.txt

Guess you'll need the weekend for reading :D

Don't need the text, just wondered if you could get to the two JS items from the EE on 3G and the answer is yes.

If you can get ti to work with 3G and windows then the 3G DNS is fine, so all I can think is that there is an oddity under the linux side of things.

Have you tried alternative browsers just to rule out an oddity in FF under certain conditions. Try something that isn't based on FF.

Not a very far-fetched thought ;)

Well, I did try Opera :P And now also tried the filemanager-***-browser that came with the eee: Konqueror (KHTML). Freezed when trying to log in on the wiki

But then I did succeed uploading a file using FF and 3G modem  At the office which means another base station than last time (at home). But that shouldn't matter?

Ah, well. Maybe one should just accept that the Linux world is full of peculiarities (and remember to always have a Win machine at hand as a last resort).

Thanks for your help and advice

From what you've said I'd be considering that the 3G card has a config issue or there is a driver issue etc.

Other option was that firefox is being stupid and locking on JS, which has been known. What point version of FF are you using and have you tried going back to FF 2 or even seamonkey and seeing what happens if you're curious?

Yes, it could well be a driver issue. Always a potential problem since hardware manufacturers not always offer drivers for Linux so that they are 3rd party developed. My 3G modem (Huawei E220) worked OOTB on my eee, but not with the same functionalities as in win and there might be something odd there.

It's FF3.0.6 on both win and linux machines. And yes, theoretically I could return to FF2 but I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle. In principle everything that can be done in win can eventually be done in linux, but it sometimes means an awful lot of work.

Thanks again!
