Squirm !!

Featured Replies

Hi all

Starting to suffer from "squirm" under braking

The more technical might call it "directional instability"

Front tyres are 1/2 worn P-zero Nero's

What do you reckon ? Tyres, or the infamous console bushes (never changed) ?

Cheers

Rick

Could be anything to do with tyres, brakes, steering, suspension or the road surface. you just have to check out each one in turn.

Easiest to rule out is the road surface-- does it squirm on every road ?

Then tyres-- are they the same tread pattern, inflated evenly?

Wheel rims-- swap front wheeels over to see if it squirms differently, if it does then one rim is buckled.

Brakes-- are the pads worn, discs old and distorted, wheels cylinders leaking fluid?

Steering-- does it drive straight without holding the steering wheel on a level smooth road?

Suspension-- the most difficult to diagnose. You will need to check all the front bushes, damaged droplinks & wisbones, wheel bearings.

Theres enough for you to get on with, good luck.

more than likely the console bushes causing the instability , the amount of movement that occurs has got to be seen to be believed when the bushes are worn/split

Thanks for the input

I reckon it probably is the bushes, will see what my local specialist will charge to do 'em at the next service

indeed, lateral movement of the wheels when on a rolling road is shocking! (if the bushes are dead that is)

Hi

Finally had the bushes sorted plus the *very* rusty ARB/bushes/mounts replaced

Result = happiness :)

Everything now stays in a straight line and feels 500% tighter !

Thanks for the input
