Front wishbone front bolt

Featured Replies

If that makes sense ! lol

Was about to do the front wishbone bushes today, both front and console but the 18mm bolt through the front bush is solid. Its come out about 15mm but is now locked solid, wont come out wont go back in :(

Any hints or tips as to what could help ? Obviously tried soaking in WD40 and the like but still wont budge. I am right in thinking this bolt goes into another part of what is the aluminium console section ?

whats happened is the bolt thread and the thread in the alloy have basically bonded themselves together , to fix it will involve a load of messing about i.e. cutting/drilling and tapping or helicoiling the alloy in the console

which side is the problem on ?

Can you get some heat to one end without danger? A bit of expansion then contraction can work wonders.

The console will now be knackered and have no thread left in it.

Keep bolts and consoles spare as it happens quite a bit especially if the bushes had been done before.

Tried some localised heat earlier, enough to get the alloy hot but not enough to damage the rubber bush still in and still no movement.

Its the drivers side, The car can now not really be moved far, obviously the front is moving all over the place ! These are the factory fitted bushes - 5 years old now. The rear console ones are a right mess :(

If its replacement console time whats the likely damage price wise ?? Easy enough part to get second hand ?

Regret buying this POS to be honest, dare i say should have stuck with vauxhall !

Just on a side note the front wishbones are now also solidly connected to the console, Even if i cut and butcher the bolts i still cant get at the rest of it inside the front bush on the arm

You have to cut the bolt off flush with the front of the subframe, lever the complete wishbone and console out together.

cheers ross, the whole setup seems a strange design in the use of aluminim with these bolts etc.

Might give it one more bash tomorrow, got nothing to lose now if i need a new console unit anyways !

One final question does anyone know if the console unit is shared across the fabia 1/polo 9n etc platforms ? If so anyone got the part number/s for the unit ? Prefer the SEAT one if poss as they are 2 mins up the road.

Last one i promise, anyone have an idea on removing the whole console ??

Thanks

yes , all the consoles are the same between Seat,VW,Skoda,Audi, only the N/S one on 6 speed gearboxes is modfied for clearance

i have a complete brand new O/S console for sale

i'll get a bolt for it , then you are sorted

only 6 bolts hold the console on after you have cut the head off the stuck bolt , 2 big bolts up into the body, 2 smaller bolts up into the steering rack and 2 for the roll bar mount

Hello,

Took some snaps of console to give better view.Wheel bolt fitted the thread guessing 1.5m/m pitch X 12m/m diameter.

The front bush is free rolling, unlike the rear bush which is captive/trapped on 17m/m hexgon type spike.

Had (2) genuine console's with rear bush already fitted £77+ vat each, just had both sides recently fitted by garage, in 2 hours, total. Keeping old consoles for future problems.
