57 Plate Octavia II vRS Hatch Towbar

Featured Replies

Hi There,

Any ideas were i can get a low cost towbar fitted with twin electrics in Newport S.Wales?

Will i hit any problems as i have reverse parking sensors?

Does the VAG CAN-BUS System need coding?

How hard are the DIY packs you can get?

I think thats enough questions for now!!!

Look forward to your replies

Matt

Matt can't help you in South Wales, but as a ball park figure my 57 plate vRS estate and my new 09 vRS hatch both cost about £400 to have a Brink fixed bracket and twin electrics fitted by a local specialist. This was arranged by the supplying dealer before collecting the cars.

Can't say much for the technical side but can say the 57 plate towed 5000 miles in 18 months and the new one has done about 800 miles towing so far (we are currently on our easter tour!) and have had no electrical problems ... fridge stays cool, battery charges and Alko ATC gets the power it needs so quite happy.

Don't have parking sensors ... you might need to go down the detatchable route.

I don't feel it's a DIY job that I would be happy to undertake ... but then i'm just a simple minded primary teacher!

I have also found a dedicated plug in wiring kit for £118.00.

Does any one know where the plug is to plug in towing electrics?

I have a whitter fixed tow bar (alko) with twin electrics on my octy estate. £400 fitted by a local specialist including dedicated wiring kit.

The plug in wiring kit plugs into the boot somewhere but this only does the black socket. My fitter ran a thick wire from the front to the back for the fridge supply.

Vag com is needed if you want to:

  • disable reversing sensors when towing
  • active dash bulb warning light for trailer lights
  • disable car rear fog but active trailer rear fog (stops you getting blinded by red light reflecting of caravan)
  • Activate car alarm if car alarmed and trailer unhooked (though my chap couldn't get this to work).

Not a DIY job IMO.

As to the reversing sensors when not towing I very occasionally get a single rogue beep when reversing so not a problem. I have a removable bump place for hitching up (cheaper than a new bumber...)
