Climate/air con fan

Featured Replies

Hi all,

The air con fan that sits in the engine bay next to the normal radiator fan has not worked for ages. Two dealers have now had a look but have not yet bottomed it. First I was told it would come on above 4 deg, this was in winter but now it's summer at 18 deg, still no fan. Today it's been re-gassed, still no fan and they didn't know why. Anyone got any welcome ideas?

Check the resistor unit which is low down in the engine bay on the LHS mounted on the chassis rail - remove the undertray to see it. There are two low value high wattage resistors in here which give the low speed fan settings for aircon on and for first stage engine cooling.

The one fitted to my car is made by CGS (UK!) but I notice that VAG replacements are now Chinese. It's in a rectangular box with 3 (rusty) tag connections. If this checks out OK, have a look at their associated relays - see wiring diagram. Unscrew the resistor terminals, wax the screws and put them back if you want to be able to disconnect it later on - otherwise it will end up as a rusty seized up mess.

Why VAG need two separate low speed resistors is beyond me - I would have thought half fan speed would do for either job, given the cooling system control is under closed loop control. At least the B5.5 doesn't have the resistors in the motor though, like the Golf - designed by a complete nutter.

Thanks for that rotodiesel, I'll mention it when it goes back in.
