Gear lever gaiter

Featured Replies

Has anybody made a new gear lever gaiter from scratch? Mine has started to fall appart and I feel I need the challenge of making my own. It's not hard to get hold of leather and I guess I could cut the old one up to make a pattern but just wondered if anybody had done it before... I will probably just go for it and post any helpful hints and tips I find along the way. If I can be bothered and people are interested, I may even do a little photo guide on how to do it.

I have just finished recovering my dining chairs and have some black suede left over. I don't think I have ever seen a suede gaiter before but maybe its worth a go. I guess all the fluff will stick to it though...

I guess this job would be greatly simplified with a sewing machine capable of sewing leather. You'd probably want to sew in some elasticated hem on the bit to be at the bottom as it is stretched as much as possible (when sewn and let go will bunch up and should hold around the rim in the centre console).

If you don't try making one, I've got a spare black leather gaiter for an Octavia if your interested.

I notice that the original one is just bonded to the plastic bit that clips into the surrounding trim. Elastic may be a better idea though. Still yet to find the time but I will get around to it eventually. My octavia is trying to test my patience at the moment with a little staring problem. Something else to get around to.

Thanks to SimonJ I will soon be the owner of an L&K gaiter but being a bit stubborn when I get an idea in my head I will finish making my own gaiter out of suede. I am wondering how else I can customise it, apart from the stitching, which won't look tacky. Was thinking of maybe doing a TDI logo but I think thats probably a bit tacky. Any ideas??
