Changing wheels - Intermittent ASR light

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Just a quick one;

Changed my two front wheels this morning, drove round the street, no issues. Then got on the express way, as soon as i hit some decent speed i get a flashing ASR light.

What have i done wrong?

Cheers.

What do you mean by 'changed'? This often happens when the circumference if the tyres is significantly different. Could you have a new tyre on that's the wrong profile?

There you have it. Mk3 Golf GTi wheels are 195/50/R15 (or equivalent), and Fabia vRS ones are 205/45/R16 (or equivalent). This works out at about 2.6% difference in circumference, which would be plenty to send the ABS / ASR unit into spasms! If you're planning on using the Golf wheels much, you'll need some 55-profile tyres to avoid the problems you're having...

or change all 4 wheels.

So the fact the front wheels are one size and the rears another could be causing this?

Its not sooo much of a problem, i just press the ASR before i set up - Although the brakes are going a little crazy! But i'll just take it easy so long as im doing no damage!

I suppose IN THEORY, as long as the brakes are operating OK, then everything else is secondary - but I can't recommend it...

If I were you, I'd swap the backs too or stay off the road until your new wheels are ready!

Cant stay off the road . . . Gotta work!

The backs will be changed tomorrow, i just didnt have the time today! :thumbdwn:

I really wouldn't recommend running like this, it almost certainly voids your insurance as they'll know it causes erratic ABS behaviour...

Oh, right... just read above.. no worries then, just be extra careful getting home tonight.

Yep. I'd say so. The ECU will see different speeds at the rear wheels.

wouldnt recommend as the abs will be cutting in and out all the time and might cause a accident

Swapped the rears over to my old MK3 GTi wheels this morning . . . seems to have sorted it!

Almost died on the way home . . . I think i need reminding that when you change wheels, its probably advisable to actually tighten the wheels, rather then just put the bolts in! :cool:
