Brake lights, loose connection?

Featured Replies

I was following the vRS the other day and noticed that neither the right hand light light, nor the high level light came on with the left hand light. A few miles further on, both sides were working, but still no high level light.

The intermittent problem with the right hand light seems to suggest that something is loose? Could the high level light be a related issue or is it likely to be a separate problem? How many bulbs are there in the high level light? I'm guessing they are unlikely to have all blown together unless there is a common cause?

You're not getting an engine management light as well are you? If so, it's the brake light switch that's faulty.

If I was getting an engine management light, I'd have said.

Surely, if it was the switch, I would have all lights on or off together?

I think you're on the right lines, but wanted to make sure, because tracking down loose connections can be a right bar steward of a job!

Bit rude. Guy was only trying to help.

My brake light switch failed last week. No brake lights at all, no cruise control but also my engine management light did not come on.

It did show up on a diagnostics check (error 16955 - Brake light switch, implausible signal) & when I reset the fault my cruise control would work for a while but not my brake lights.

AIUI the switch has 4 contacts, 2 for the brake lights & 2 for the CC signal so, like you say, if it was the switch I would have thought all the brake lights would be off.
