Is this the sound of a dying DMF?

Featured Replies

A day of pottering around West Midlands Safari Park yesterday (what else do you do on such a glorious sunny day! :D) meant a lot of creeping, slow speed driving and stationary idling.

The creeping was fine however when idling in neutral (or in neutral with foot on the cluth) there was a definite soft grating/grinding/scruntching noise from the transmission which went away if I engaged a gear and had the clutch down or when i was on the move or creeping.

Car was custom mapped by Jabba in November, has covered a fair few thousand miles since then and hasn't had any slip under power but this noise is persistent and getting worse.

Should I fear the worst or is it likely to be something less terminal to my wallet?? :(

Probs the same as mine.

Turn all the fans off and music off, engage gear then disengage and you hear a mechanical "click-clunk" noise every 3-4 seconds rhythmically.

Not too worried about it, no slip at the moment and iit doesnt seem to do it all the time?

it's not a rythmic click-clunk it's more a contstant vibration when in neutral

If i put it into first then took it straight out again it would stop - very wierd - but as you say no slip means i'm not too worried

Probably just the clutch release bearing. Mine vibrates / chatters slightly when in neutral, but once the clutch is engaged it goes away.

Unless it's quite loud I'd say it's just a characteristic of the car...

Thanks Wills

That sounds like my problem but it is defeinetely getting louder = worse

I'm guessing its probably not a quick fix?

To be honest mate unless it's sounding serious I'd be tempted to leave it for a bit. As I say a bit of chatter / vibration is normal in neutral, but if you're sure it's getting worse then it could well mean a gearbox out job with new clutch and dmf.

It's ok i've managed to find the solution.....

***turns stereo up***

noise is no more!

I'll probably highlight it next time it gets serviced and see what the professionals think, but until it starts slipping I'm not overly concerned

nice one:)
