Vrs Engine cooling fan

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can anyone please shed any light on the following problem!

2008 Octavia Vrs petrol.

Parked up on my driveway last night, the car had been there for hours(cold) I heard what I thought was a car engine running, so went out to have a look. The noise was my car with both cooling fans running at full! Alarm was not going off.

Found a thread on here, but now unable to find it again. Here it mentioned fuse box/relay problem with moisture getting in.

I removed fuse (no 38) to prevent it running all night and flattening the battery. Before doing this I did take car for short run, which stopped cooling fan running. Then it started up again after approx 15 mins.

The car has now been parked up for approx 12 hours, so went out and popped fuse back in. The fans started running again, so have removed fuse again.

Spoke to dealer earlier, who said he had not heard of this problem, and I could book it in for them to look at. If it was a simple fix I would rather not go to dealer, as it's 74 miles away, and about 1.5 hours each way.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Stuck relay?

Any idea where the relay lives? Is it in the fuse box in engine bay? Thanks.

Hi, that thread would have been me.

http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/mental-engine-fans/85053/

It was a control module for the fan i think, basically, it was waterlogged and corroded which was causing it to go mental. (No seal on the box so water was free to get in)

Savilles Garage (Kidderminster) resolved this for me, it took a lot of prodding and poking to find. If you phone them and ask them about it they may be able to help. I think Simpsons Skoda managed to fix the same problem too for someone else.

I hope that helps.

Ta,

ooo, i unplugged the battery rather than removing the fuse. When the battery was plugged back in, the fans waited for a while before coming on again. Rather than being instant. I would assume that removing the fuse doesn't 'reset' anything.

Thanks for your replies. May have to book car in at dealer.

Can anyone tell me where I might find this fan relay, at least I could maybe remove it and have a look for water ingress. Cheers.

I had this problem recently.

It was water in the Fuse box in the engine. Had been through a car wash that did under chassis washing. Went on for a couple of weeks till i had chance to take out the Box and dry it off with a Hair dryer. I also drove a couple of long journeys with the cover off. When i parked up i used to just remove the fuse (36 iirc). No problems at all now and it was a couple fo months ago

Drove the car to work last night. Fuse was removed so cooling fan could not run on its own. Got in it to drive home, not enough power in battery to start engine!!!!

Something weird going off in the old electrical department!!!!

Had car at dealers under warranty. They have replaced what they call an ebox, which looked like a fuse box to me. It is the one next to the battery. Water ingress!!!

Appears ok now, just had 3 warning lights on dashboard light up on two separate occasions. Traction control, ABS and tyre pressure monitor. They did not stay on for very long! Not sure what that is.

Thanks to all that offered advice and suggestions.

The lights just come on if the battery has been off for a while. Once you drive about 300m they all go out.

Dealer should really have cleared them but glad it's all sorted. I just dried mine out with a hairdryer :D:D

I am also having similar problems with my Octy II TDI. A local auto elec claimed that the only cure was a new complete fusebox, whereas a local VW group specialist breaker said that the cooling fans would be the problem as he had supplied many in the past and they were a known weakness. A local main dealer confirmed the breakers probable diagnosis. On ebay there are a lot of cooling fan relays eg:

NEW Radiator cooling fan relay SKODA Octavia on eBay (end time 20-Jul-09 17:14:08 BST)

I have been told that these werent fitted to the octyII Pd engines. Please help, only had car short period of time and this is the only problem I can mention!!

Is it likely to be fusebox, relay??, or the fans, can really afford process of elimination and dealers seem not to agree on probable cause.

My Skoda Superb, had a failed VISCOUS Coupling, there were odd noises coming from the front area of the engine, turns out the bearing failed, and this in turn led to the fan popping off, and waiting in the cowling.

How do i replace the viscous coupling ?. The old viscous coupling is off the fan, but now i am stuck as to the next steps.

Also, the brake and oil warning lights keep on coming on. I have checked the oil level, and checked the brake linings. All ok..

Regards

Amir

It's a Skoda Superb 2005 55 reg.......Elegance - 130PS PD.

Any help and advice much appreciated.

You will probably get better responses if you post in the Superb sub-forum. This is the Octavia II sub-forum, and Octy IIs only have electric cooling fans, not viscous coupling driven fans.
