High level brake light - vrs estate 2003

Featured Replies

Does anyone out there know of a way round paying over £60:mad: from a main dealer to either get a new strip of led's, or somehow put in an aftermarket set of 12v bulbs?

I have managed to get the unit out in one peice and have bought an aftermarket strip of 12v bulbs but they do not fit in the exsisting unit!

If I take out the unit altogther will it fail its MOT?

Maybe because it's a crap design fault the dealer should do it for nothing

Thanks in advance...

if it helps in the 4 years I have had mine it has had 3 replacement units all due to water getting into them. the last one was done under a deal with skoda and so far so good

all I can say is that it is a pain in the ......... to sort and I am hoping that it does not go again

ref the mot I can not help you but there are a few testers on here who could advise

I have seen pre-facelift estates with bulbs in the high level brake light. I don't think that they are a requirement, though if it is fitted and connected it should be working. If it is not fitted and it is clear to the tester that it is disconnected, I don't think that it should fail. To be working as far as the test goes, only one LED has to light up.

At 6 years old it has lasted about half the design life of the car and Skoda have to make money selling parts.

I got mine for around £50 from TPS this time last year. I think you need high level lights in anything later than 1998. I may be wrong though. I looked at mine today and its got condensation in! So i may possible need to buy an other one soon.

I bought a 12v strip of LED's from ebay for about £6, which is totally waterproof which should mean it will last beyond the life time of the car. I threw away the "defuser" strip, and had to trim each end of the rubber strip about a mm or so, but it pushed in.

Twas then I saw that clear LED's are too bright for the red glass, so I have a pink 3rd brake light until I can be bothered changing it. I'm sure I fired up a picture somewhere of said pinkness.....

As for MOT, mine passed with the light out, with an advisory that it be replaced.

Hi,

Been told my high level brake light is out today by a mate of mine. Is it an easy job to replace the unit? How would I get the existing one out? £60 is a little steep but I guess I've had 6 years out of the current one...

Cheers,

Mike
