Morning all,

Can anyone advise me if there is a way to find out if your car has been remapped? I have a 2000 plate slxi turbo which beats my friends 52 plate vrs and basically goes like stink! Ive had no joy trying to contact the previous owner as he is no doubt smiling his head off whilst rocking backwards and forwards in an asylum after driving this thing!

Next question is about K&N induction kits. I know there is the heat issue but that noise is sooooo sexy! Can anyone recommend a place where i might buy one at a cheapish price?

Next question! I am looking to change the back box so again if anyone can recommend somewhere in the Bedfordshire area that does performance exhausts?

And finally, I have been offered a set of clocks out of a vrs and wondered where i stand legally on changing mine with regards to mileage differences etc?

Many thanks for reading

Gaby

I'd say if it can beat a standard vRS then its been remapped. Either that or the vRS is a bit under the weather!

The only way you can tell for sure is to get it rolling roaded or get a boost gauge on it and see if it's making more than the standard boost (which on a non-vRS 1.8T is about 7psi). I'd be a bit annoyed if someone sold me a remapped car and didn't tell me, it would cause all sorts of **** with the insurance if I wrecked it!

You can get cheap cold air intake kits off of ebay but the filters that come with them are cheap and nasty so keep the pipework but replace the filter with a K&N or Pipercross one.

I think both; without a new turbo and bigger injectors an SLX isn't going over the stock power of a vRS.

As for the guage swap, there's no legal impediment to doing it

To keep the maximum value for the SLX, get a receipt for the vRS cluster showing the date and recorded mileage, and keep the SLX cluster to prove the mileage it had done when you did the swap.

Good point Ken, it may have a different turbo on it. The earliest non-vRS 1.8T Octavias had the K03 turbo (as per the Golf GTi) rather than the K03s like the vRS does. So even with a remap it would be hard pushed to make more than ~175bhp. I'd suspect possibly its been upgraded to a K03s or even a hybrid/K04
