Rear Brake Caliper

Recommended Posts

Hi. What was supposed to be a relaxing afternoon doing the simple job of changing my rear pads has become a right pain in the a$$.

On the rear right, the rubber boot protecting the piston was completely gone and the cyclinder was seized. While using my wind-back tool to push the piston back in, I managed to snap the brake union just at the end of the flexible hose

So after much bad language a quick look at the piston shows that I will need a new caliper. It's pretty badly scratched all around and even if I fitted a new boot, I don't think it was extend very smoothly.

So finally my question .... will a caliper from a passat/A4 etc fit? The caliper on it is marked with an Audi and a VW symbol so I'm guessing its common across the marques, but can anyone confirm exactly what models should have the same caliper.

Also what are peoples thoughts about using a second hand caliper?

Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about fitting a S/H one as long as it appears to be in good condition, i.e the boot is still in one piece and the piston winds in and out ok, I'm almost certain you can re-boot them, perhaps someone else can confirm.

The Passat caliper will, of course, fit. If the piston is damaged on yours, don't use it.

Inspect the banjo hydraulic couplings to the calipers - VAG used copper washers next to an aluminium caliper - so they corrode. I replace these with aluminium washers.

rotodiesel.
