Fabia TDI bang and black smoke

Featured Replies

2006 fabia vrs 1.9tdi 130 standard

huge bang followed by cloud of black smoke, rough running and lack of power.

Turbo gone or dump valve?

Limped home under 1400 rpm to minimise black smoke.

No dump valve. Boost hose popped off, or turbo gone. Good bet it will just be a boost hose off, probably at the intercooler.

Sounds like mine when the intercooler hose popped off.

Hope it's a straight forward fix. Mine needed a bit of bodging as it damaged the fixing point on the intercooler. A £10 bodge by my mechanic was better than a new cooler at £xxx.......20k miles later its still going.

Yet ANOTHER popped boost hose. :D Such a pain yet such an inexpensive fix. :)

Take it this is a common thing then, having a bad day today, my other car decided it didn't want to start due to the heat. (Still waiting for the AA 5 hours later) LMAO

Can I fix this boost hose myself? What does it look like?

Once a clip has popped it will be weakened and be easier to pop again (I assume it went BANG on full boost?) Only surefire solution is to replace all plastic pipework will alloy pipework and silicone bends held with tough boost clips.

It looks like a hose about 40-45mm in diameter, and has mostly like popped off at the intercooler located in the offside edge of the front bumper. :) You can trace it by following the tough black hardwall pipe that comes out the back left of the engine and disappears down at the front left of the engine bay, as you look at it. The popped one is usually the one underneath the car, coming from the turbo.

I took the car into the garage and they agreed with your diagnosis, bodged up a repair to keep me teaching until the new bit arrives.
