Tyres for a rapid?

Featured Replies

I'm getting confused here. Presently my rapid's running 165/80 13's on 5.5 J wheels so I reckon that 186/65 R13's would be the ticket to keep the rolling radius the same, if anyone made decent ones that is.

175/70's would also do the job

Ideally I want plenty of grip so my daughter doesn't spin out on a daily basis and they don't have to last forever and ever either.

Anyone got a tried and tested recommendation?

EDIT: I notice you can get 185/60R13 Yokohamas and Toyos for sensible money online too

I used to run 185/70 s on the rear and 185/60 s on the front with 40mm lowered suspension. Plenty of grip and the speedo stayed nearly acurate. I found cheapo Nangkangs stuck better than more expensive brands as they were a soft compound

I would go for a performance tyre and a good set of dampers to start with.

Quick calc says that 185/70R13 raises gearing by 1%, which is less than the tread depth.

Or if you're prepared to buy new rims, you could use 185/60R14s.

It might be better to fit uprated dampers. If you can't find any for a Rapid, you can use Volvo 140 series fronts and SAAB 900 Combi or TR7 rears.

Depends on how much money you have got to play with. Unless you have drasticly increaded the power of the rapid or your daughter drives like she stole it, the rapid is prety sure footed and not prone to spinning out unless provoked

Just buy the best tyres you can afford that will also clear water well. I have use Toyo's and they seem fine. They use to do some f3's that my mate used on his Ginetta for hillclimbs and they lasted for ages and gave good grip. At least you have one set of wheels driving and the other steering, so I would hope your wear should be less than a normal fwd. Someone should be able to confirm if this is the case, so you could run a softer tyre like my friend did on his 700kg Ginetta.

AAHHGGGGGHHHHHH!!

I put a comment on that I'd presumed stock was 165/80R13 earlier this morning, and now it's gone!
