Centre Console A/C lights intermittant

My Octavia 1.6 has developed a problem now where the lights that light up the centre console fan speed, temperature and air direction dials does not light up when I switch on the headlights, unless I give the centre console a really good thump, then it lights up! The A/C switch and Recirc switch lights up just fine.

I have the regular circular dials, NOT the climatronic one.

I would rather look at the problem myself rather than give it to the dealers and have a disgruntled underpaid technician break something trying to fix it, especially as the car isn't under warranty anymore.

Can anyone give me some tips on how to remove it? I don't see any obvious screws.
